چکیده

Images generated with helical scanning are degraded by partial volume artifacts caused by an increased slice thickness when compared to conventional computed tomography (CT) scanning. The slice thickness for a helical scan is proportional to the sum of the thickness of the fan of radiation and the distance the patient moves during data acquisition. We present a method called moving beam helical scanning (MBHS) which significantly reduces the partial volume artifacts caused by h e l i d scanning. The key element of MBHS is a rotatable collimator that is placed between the X-ray source and the patient. As the patient is translated, the collimator is used to aim the fan on a fixed position in the patient. Once sufficient data are obtained to reconstruct a slice, the collimator is quickly reset to scan a target in the next slice. We examined the performance of MBHS by scanning wires and phantoms on a modified scanner. The full-width-at-tenth-maximum of the slice profile at iso-center for MBHS is identical to conventional CT versus a 59% increase for conventional helical scanning. We conclude that MBHS can be used to obtain the scan rate advantages of helical scanning with image quality comparable to conventional scanning.

Evaluation of subsecond gated helical CT for quantification of coronary artery calcium and comparison with electron beam CT.

OBJECTIVE Since its introduction early in the 1990s, helical CT has become the predominant technology for obtaining CT images for medical applications. Recent improvements in the temporal resolution of helical CT (subsecond) and the addition of retrospective cardiac gating are combined in this report evaluating cardiac-gated helical CT for quantifying coronary artery calcium. We compare total c...

X-ray micro-CT with a displaced detector array: application to helical cone-beam reconstruction.

In x-ray micro-CT applications, it is useful to increase the field of view by offsetting a two-dimensional (2D) detector array. In this technical note, we briefly review the methods for image reconstruction with an asymmetric 2D detector array, elaborate on the use of an associated weighting scheme in the case of helical/spiral cone-beam scanning, and perform a series of numerical tests to demo...

Practical Helical Cone Beam Algorithm for the Long Object Problem

Cone beam computed tomography (CT) based on nonplanar orbits has been an active area of research toward the goal of producing an exact volumetric reconstruction. To date, most reconstruction algorithms for non-planar orbits have been based on the theoretical framework of Tuy[1], Smith [2] and Grangeat[3]. Of all the investigated non-planar orbits, the helical scanning geometry is most promising...
