چکیده

In this letter, atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopic (STM) images obtained from monolayer SiO2/Mo(112) are presented. The results are consistent with a previously proposed structural model of isolated [SiO4] units based on vibrational features observed by high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and infrared reflection–absorption spectroscopy (IRAS), and oxygen species identified by ultra-violet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). These results are inconsistent with a structural model that assumes a two-dimensional (2-D) [Si–O–Si] network. These data illustrate that a metal substrate, although coated with an oxide thin layer, can be directly imaged at the atomic-scale with STM. 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

1 For a tetrahedral of [SiO4], the asymmetrical vibrations of Si–O should always be IR active. Unfortunately, these modes were assumed to be IR inactive in Refs. [5,6]. 2 In Refs. [5,6], TO modes were calculated and compared with those obtained from IRAS using p-polarized and grazing incidence IR light [3– 6]. However, it is well-established that for dielectric thin films only the TO mode is ob...

Structure of thin SiO2 films grown on Mo„112..

Ultra-thin SiO2 films were prepared by evaporating Si onto a Mo~112! surface followed by oxidation and annealing up to 1200 K. The surface structure and film quality were investigated by low-energy electron diffraction ~LEED!, Auger spectroscopy ~AES!, and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy ~HREELS!. A well-ordered, monolayer Mo(112)-c(232)-SiO2 structure was characterized by HRE...

An investigation of the TiOx–SiO2/Mo(112) interface

The interaction of TiOx with SiO2/Mo(112) has been studied using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and molecular adsorption. Ti at varying coverages was deposited onto a SiO2/Mo(112) surface followed by oxidation at 600K and annealing at various temperatures. TiOx disperses and covers the SiO2 surface after oxidation...

Modeling zeolites with metal-supported two-dimensional aluminosilicate films.

Zeolites are one of the most widely used materials in heterogeneous catalysis. However, the current understanding of the relation between structure and reactivity of these complex and highly porous materials mostly comes from studies employing bulk-sensitive techniques and from theoretical calculations based on educated assumptions about the inner surface within the pores present in the framewo...

Electronic and vibrational properties of ultrathin SiO2 films grown on Mo(112)

Ultrathin SiO2 films on Mo 112 were synthesized using different preparation procedures and characterized with ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy UPS , metastable impact electron spectroscopy MIES , and polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy PM-IRAS . By correlating the vibrational and electronic data, an assignment of the prominent spectral features are made. Th...
