چکیده
IntrOductIOn The mouth has fittingly been identified as the organ system, “where it all begins”. For, in the final Forensic analysis, the human dentition may have “the last word” [1]. Forensic science relies upon use of teeth and jaws as a means of identification. Teeth are more likely to survive trauma than any other part of the body [2]. They can be used for gender identification as difference in tooth size between males and females is seen even amongst members of the same family [3-5]. Genetic control of sexual dimorphism through the assessment of mesiodistal and buccolingual tooth dimensions in sibling pairs has been rarely reported. The lack of such studies in Indian subcontinent gave the impetus for the study.

Sexual dimorphism in the permanent maxillary first molar: a study of the Haryana population (India).
UNLABELLED Sexual identification of immature skeletal remains is still a difficult problem to solve in Forensic Anthropology. The aim was to evaluate the existence of sexual dimorphism in maxillary first molars. The base sample comprised 200 subjects (100 males and 100 females) aged 17-25 years. The buccolingual (BL) and mesiodistal (MD) diameters of maxillary first molars were measured using d...
متن کاملOdontometrics: A Useful Method for Gender Determination in Udaipur Population
Background: Determining gender is one of the most important parameters in forensic identification. Teeth are an excellent material in living and nonliving populations for anthropological, genetic, odontologic and forensic investigations being hardest and chemically the most stable tissue in the body, selectively preserved and fossilized, thereby providing the best records for evolutionary chang...
متن کاملSex discrimination potential of buccolingual and mesiodistal tooth dimensions.
Tooth crown dimensions are reasonably accurate predictors of sex and are useful adjuncts in sex assessment. This study explores the utility of buccolingual (BL) and mesiodistal (MD) measurements in sex differentiation when used independently. BL and MD measurements of 28 teeth (third molars excluded) were obtained from a group of 53 Nepalese subjects (22 women and 31 men) aged 19-28 years. Step...
متن کاملAssessment of Tooth Metrics in Gender Determination-A Cross Sectional Study
Gender determination is of prime importance in forensic investigations as it halves the number of possible matches [1]. Teeth are the hardest and most stable tissues in the body. Variations in size, appearance and stature of a particular object which can differentiate a male from female is referred to as sexual dimorphism. Odontometrics play an important role in assessing the gender of the indi...
متن کامل. - A . A . D . Odontometric Study of Medieval Danes ' DOROTHY
A study of tooth size was carried out on medieval skeletal material from Aebelholt and Naestved in Denmark. Measurements of all suitable permanent teeth were made in both mesiodistal and buccolingual dimensions with a sliding caliper with vernier reading to 0.1 mm. The material was divided according to sex and place of excavation; statistical preparation of the data provided mean values and sta...
