Collusion as public monitoring becomes noisy: Experimental evidence

چکیده
This paper uses laboratory experiments to test the implications of the theory of repeated games on equilibrium payoffs and estimate strategies in an infinitely repeated prisoners’ dilemma game with imperfect public monitoring. We find that subjects’ payoffs (i) decrease as noise increases, and (ii) are lower than the theoretical maximum for low noise, but exceed it for high noise. Under the assumption that the subjects’ strategy uses thresholds on the public signal for transition between cooperation and punishment states, we find that the best fitting strategy simply compares the most recent public signal against a single threshold. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. Tacit collusion in repeated auctions
This paper considers the question of tacit collusion in repeated auctions with independent private values and with limited public monitoring. McAfee and McMillan show that the extent of collusion is tied to availability of transfers. Monetary transfers allow cartels to extract full surplus. A folk theorem proved by Fudenberg at al. shows that transfers of future payoffs are almost as good if pl...
متن کاملIs Full Compliance Possible? Conditions for Shirking with Imperfect Monitoring and Continuous Action Spaces
Games of public good provision, collective action, and collusion share concern for the free rider that shirks on its obligations. According to the folk theorem, the free rider problem can be resolved through punishment mechanisms. Versions of the folk theorem have been applied when monitoring is imperfect. Empirical evidence contradicts this theory: while often subjects cooperate significantly,...
متن کاملOn the Collusion-Resistance of the Fingerprinting Algorithm Based on Additive Watermarking
Digital fingerprinting is the technique used for traitor tracing in multimedia content distribution. It embeds unique customer information (e.g., customer ID) into multimedia content and generates different copies for different customers. The unique customer information can be extracted from the illegal copy and used to tell the traitor who re-distributes his copy to other unauthorized customer...
متن کاملTacit Collusion in Auctions and Conditions for Its Facilitation and Prevention: Equilibrium Selection in Laboratory Experimental Markets
The paper studies bidder behavior in simultaneous, continuous, ascending price auctions. We design and implement a ‘‘collusion incubator’’ environment based on a type of public, symmetrically ‘‘folded’’ and ‘‘item-aligned’’ preferences. Tacit collusion develops quickly and reliably within the environment. Once tacit collusion developed, it proved remarkably robust to institutional changes that ...
متن کاملTacit collusion with imperfect monitoring in the Canadian manufacturing industry: an empirical study
This article undertakes a cross-sectoral analysis of a salient empirical implication of the model of tacit collusion advanced by Abreu, Pearce, and Stachetti (1986). Specifically, we assess the prevalence of a first-order Markovian process for alternating between price wars and collusive periods through nonparametric tests. The analysis focuses on 30 different industries in Canada. The evidence...
