An average study of hypergraphs and their minimal transversals

چکیده
In this paper, we study some average properties of hypergraphs and the average complexity of algorithms applied to hypergraphs under different probabilistic models. Our approach is both theoretical and experimental since our goal is to obtain a random model that is able to capture the real-data complexity. Starting from a model that generalizes the Erdös-Renyi model [9, 10], we obtain asymptotic estimations on the average number of transversals, minimals and minimal transversals in a random hypergraph. We use those results to obtain an upper bound on the average complexity of algorithms to generate the minimal transversals of an hypergraph. Then we make our random model more complex in order bring it closer to real-data and identify cases where the average number of minimal tranversals is at most polynomial, quasipolynomial or exponential.

Faster Algorithms to Enumerate Hypergraph Transversals
A transversal of a hypergraph is a set of vertices intersecting each hyperedge. We design and analyze new exponential-time algorithms to enumerate all inclusion-minimal transversals of a hypergraph. For each fixed k ≥ 3, our algorithms for hypergraphs of rank k, where the rank is the maximum size of a hyperedge, outperform the previous best. This also implies improved upper bounds on the maximu...
متن کاملA New Algorithm for the Hypergraph Transversal Problem
We consider the problem of finding all minimal transversals of a hypergraph H ⊆ 2 , given by an explicit list of its hyperedges. We give a new decomposition technique for solving the problem with the following advantages: (i) Global parallelism: for certain classes of hypergraphs, e.g. hypergraphs of bounded edge size, and any given integer k, the algorithm outputs k minimal transversals of H i...
متن کاملIdentifying the Minimal Transversals of a Hypergraph and Related Problems
The paper considers two decision problems on hypergraphs, hypergraph saturation and recognition of the transversal hypergraph, and discusses their significance for several search problems in applied computer science. Hypergraph saturation, i.e., given a hypergraph H, decide if every subset of vertices is contained in or contains some edge of H, is shown to be co-NP-complete. A certain subproble...
متن کاملAverage Size of Implicational Bases
Implicational bases are objects of interest in formal concept analysis and its applications. Unfortunately, even the smallest base, the Duquenne-Guigues base, has an exponential size in the worst case. In this paper, we use results on the average number of minimal transversals in random hypergraphs to show that the base of proper premises is, on average, of quasi-polynomial size.
متن کاملExact Transversal Hypergraphs and Application to Boolean µ-Functions
Call an hypergraph, that is a family of subsets (edges) from a finite vertex set, an exact transversal hypergraph iff each of its minimal transversals, i.e., minimal vertex subsets that intersect each edge, meets each edge in a singleton. We show that such hypergraphs are recognizable in polynomial time and that their minimal transversals as well as their maximal independent sets can be generat...
