چکیده

We use a front tracking algorithm to explicitly construct entropy solutions for the LighthillWhitham-Richards traffic flow model with a flow-density relationship that is piecewise quadratic, continuous, non-smooth, and non-concave. The solution is exact if the initial condition is piecewise linear and the boundary conditions are piecewise constant. The algorithm serves as a fast and accurate solution tool for the prediction of spatio-temporal traffic conditions and as a diagnostic tool for testing the performance of numerical schemes. Numerical examples are used to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method relative to numerical solutions that are obtained using a fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme.

Fundamental Diagram of Traffic Flow New Identification Scheme and Further Evidence from Empirical Data

This paper further investigates the specification and calibration of FDs. The purpose is to provide a consistent, systematic, and adaptive way to obtain FDs from single-loop detector measurements. In particular, the piecewise linear form is adopted for the FD, because (a) more-complex forms of the FD can be approximated by a piecewise linear form with arbitrarily many pieces, and (b) empirical ...

Heterogeneous Traffic Flow Modelling with the Lwr Model Using Passenger-car Equivalents

SUMMARY This paper presents an extension of Lighthill, Whitham and Richards' dynamic traffic flow model (LWR) to a number of vehicle classes. Each class will be described by a separate fundamental diagram. When the various diagrams are similar in shape a scaling can be carried out that is related to the passenger-car equivalents. We present both an analytical framework and a numerical computati...

In the present paper scalar macroscopic models for traffic and pedestrian flows are coupled and the resulting system is investigated numerically. For the traffic flow the classical Lighthill-Whitham model on a network of roads and for the pedestrian flow the Hughes model are used. These models are coupled via terms in the fundamental diagrams modeling an influence of the traffic and pedestrian ...

A new model for multi-commodity macroscopic modeling of complex traffic networks

We propose a macroscopic modeling framework for a network of roads and multi-commodity traffic. The proposed framework is based on the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards kinematic wave theory; more precisely, on its discretization, the Cell Transmission Model (CTM), adapted for networks and multicommodity traffic. The resulting model is called the Link-Node CTM (LNCTM). In the LNCTM, we use the fundame...

Well-posedness and finite volume approximations of the LWR traffic flow model with non-local velocity

We consider an extension of the traffic flow model proposed by Lighthill, Whitham and Richards, in which the mean velocity depends on a weighted mean of the downstream traffic density. We prove well-posedness and a regularity result for entropy weak solutions of the corresponding Cauchy problem, and use a finite volume central scheme to compute approximate solutions. We perform numerical tests ...
