چکیده

Smith et al. (2003, hereafter referred to as Smith et al.) present seven new isotopic ages from the Green River Formation in the greater Green River Basin. These data provide welcome new information in the ongoing effort to develop a coherent and reliable geochronological framework for this large and stratigraphically complex basin. Several of their main conclusions are based on a revised age estimate for the Wasatchian-Bridgerian North American Land Mammal Age boundary. For instance, Smith et al. use the revised age estimate for the Wasatchian-Bridgerian boundary to argue that the onset of maximum temperatures during the early Eocene climate optimum (EECO) could not have caused the faunal turnover that marks the boundary. Since no vertebrate fossils are known from the stratigraphic sections presented in Smith et al., these important conclusions rest entirely on their reinterpretation of a magnetostratigraphic correlation presented in Clyde et al. (2001, hereafter referred to as Clyde et al.). Unfortunately, the authors overlook several impor-

40Ar/39Ar geochronology of the Eocene Green River Formation, Wyoming

The deposits of Eocene Lake Gosiute that constitute the Green River Formation of Wyoming contain numerous tuff beds that represent isochronous, correlatable stratigraphic markers. Tuff beds selected for 40Ar/39Ar analysis occur within laminated mudstone, are matrix supported, and lack evidence of reworking. These tuffs contain 2%–15% euhedral phenocrysts of quartz, plagioclase, sanidine, biotit...

High-resolution calibration of Eocene strata: 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of biotite in the Green River Formation

The Sixth tuff of the Wilkins Peak Member of the Green River Formation is an important potential calibration point for magnetic stratigraphy, mammalian evolution, and lacustrine processes. However, two recent 40Ar/39Ar ages based on laser fusion of biotite from this important bed are not in agreement with one other. Most large, euhedral biotite from the basal 1 cm give concordant age spectra wh...

Geochronology investigation of the Bahlul Daghi volcanic dome, north of Tabriz, by application of 40Ar/39Ar dating on biotite

Tabriz Basin has had extensive Cenozoic and Quaternary volcanic activity and lies in NW Iran within the collision zone of the Arabian and Eurasian plates. Formations in the region consist of siliciclastic rocks of the Miocene age (Upper red formation), along with younger dacite volcanic rocks. The Bahlul Daghi volcanic dome in the south of Spiran is variable in terms of the composition between ...

Precise dating of biotite in distal volcanic ash: Isolating subtle alteration using 40Ar/39Ar laser incremental heating and electron microprobe techniques

Precise dating of K-rich minerals in volcanic rocks via the 40Ar/39Ar geochronometer has become crucial to resolving many geological problems. In some cases, ash beds containing biotite phenocrysts but lacking sanidine are the only datable horizons at key stratigraphic intervals, necessitating comparison of sanidine and biotite ages within the same chronostratigraphic framework. To assess the i...

Application of deuteron-deuteron (D-D) fusion neutrons to 40Ar/39Ar geochronology.

Neutron irradiation of samples for 40Ar/39Ar dating in a 235U fission reactor requires error-producing corrections for the argon isotopes created from Ca, K, and, to a lesser extent, Cl. The fission spectrum includes neutrons with energies above 2-3 MeV, which are not optimal for the 39K(n,p)39Ar reaction. These higher-energy neutrons are responsible for the largest recoil displacements, which ...
