چکیده

The importance of socioeconomic position, measured at multiple levels (e.g., individual, household, area) and across the life course, for studying health disparities is now well recognized (1–7). Our multilevel study (8) reported that individual-based socioeconomic measures (IBSMs) and area-based socioeconomic measures (ABSMs) together capture birth weight inequalities that otherwise would have been missed by considering one or the other. We found additionally that, in the absence of IBSMs, the bulk of birth weight disparities captured by ABSMs was approximately similar to that which would have been captured by IBSMs (8). Geronimus (9) critiques these findings, in part, by (mis)interpreting our study as an examination of how well ABSMs serve as ‘‘proxies’’ for IBSMs, even though we explicitly conceptualized ABSMs as capturing some important mix of individualand area-level influences on health, thereby providing valuable information on socioeconomic disparities in health (8). In this rejoinder, we elaborate on the fundamental distinctions between our respective approaches to analyzing socioeconomic disparities in health.

Invited Commentary Invited Commentary: Heterogeneity of Particulate Matter Health Risks

Ambient particulate matter varies in composition and toxicity; therefore, some heterogeneity in risk per unit mass can be anticipated. In this issue of the Journal (Am J Epidemiol 2007;166:880–888), Dominici et al. explore temporal and spatial effect modification of particulate matter potency with the goal of gaining insights about how differences in the mixture may affect toxicity of the parti...

Blind infants in random environments: further predictions.

In their target article, Triesch et al. (2006) propose a simple model to account for the emergence of gaze following behaviour in infants. They justify the simplifications of the model by asserting that they are interested in the conditions that are sufficient for the development of gaze following behaviour. I think, however, that some of these simplifications are not just sufficient but are al...

Prediction of Patient’s Response to Cognitive-Behavior Therapy by Artificial Neural Network

Objective: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is defined as a constant fear of being embarrassed or negatively evaluated in social situations or while doing activities in the presence of others. Several studies have examined the role of certain variables that might predict response to treatment and may affect treatment outcome. The purpose of this study was to identify predictive variables of change...
