Assessment of functional development in normal infant brain using arterial spin labeled perfusion MRI
نویسندگان
چکیده
Arterial spin labeled (ASL) perfusion MRI provides a noninvasive approach for longitudinal imaging of regional brain function in infants. In the present study, continuous ASL (CASL) perfusion MRI was carried out in normally developing 7- and 13-month-old infants while asleep without sedation. The 13-month infant group showed an increase (P<0.05) of relative CBF in frontal regions as compared to the 7-month group using a region of interest based analysis. Using a machine-learning algorithm to automatically classify the relative CBF maps of the two infant groups, a significant (P<0.05, permutation testing) regional CBF increase was found in the hippocampi, anterior cingulate, amygdalae, occipital lobes, and auditory cortex in the 13-month-old infants. These results are consistent with current understanding of infant brain development and demonstrate the feasibility of using perfusion MRI to noninvasively monitor developing brain function.

Perfusion magnetic resonance imaging with continuous arterial spin labeling: methods and clinical applications in the central nervous system.
Several methods are now available for measuring cerebral perfusion and related hemodynamic parameters using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). One class of techniques utilizes electromagnetically labeled arterial blood water as a noninvasive diffusible tracer for blood flow measurements. The electromagnetically labeled tracer has a decay rate of T1, which is sufficiently long to allow perfusion ...
متن کاملClinical assessment of brain perfusion in newborn infants with arterial spin labeling perfusion MRI
INTRODUCTION. Many approaches have been applied to evaluate brain perfusion in neonates: brain ultrasound, near-infrared spectroscopy, and positron emission tomography (PET). However perfusion weighted imaging (PWI) MRI has been shown to enable in vivo direct measurements of brain perfusion in different brain regions. Recent advances have lead to the development of non-contrast agent based Arte...
متن کاملA brain stress test: Cerebral perfusion during memory encoding in mild cognitive impairment
Arterial spin labeled perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (ASL MRI) provides non-invasive quantification of cerebral blood flow, which can be used as a biomarker of brain function due to the tight coupling between cerebral blood flow (CBF) and brain metabolism. A growing body of literature suggests that regional CBF is altered in neurodegenerative diseases. Here we examined ASL MRI CBF in subj...
متن کاملSpectrally selective Arterial Spin Labeling Imaging For Breast Cancer Perfusion Study
INTRODUCTION Arterial spin labeled (ASL) MRI [1] is a non-invasive imaging method for measuring perfusion. With intrinsic tracers, the arterial spin-labeled blood, ASL-MRI can be repeatedly applied in seconds, offering great potential in breast cancer studies, especially in monitoring patients during treatment. There are only very limited studies of breast ASL-MRI [2]. One of the major limiting...
متن کاملImaging technique used to visualize brain activity associated with chronic low back pain
Owing to its varying nature, chronic pain (CP) is difficult to correlate to neural activity using conventional functional MRI. In addition, pain is a very personal experience, which is impossible for a patient to communicate accurately to a clinician. The aid of imaging technology in pain assessment would no doubt have an immense positive impact in this field. Arterial spin labeling is a perfus...
