Unemployment duration and exit states in Britain

چکیده
This paper presents new evidence on the determinants of unemployment duration for men and women in Britain in the 1990s, using a nationally representative data set. It examines the impact of individual and local labour market characteristics on the probability of unemployment spells ending with moves into full and part-time employment, self-employment and economic inactivity. The data show that the median duration of unemployment spells among men, at 5 months, is almost double that for women, although much of this differential is explained by exits to part-time work and economic inactivity among women. Multivariate analysis suggests that policies to reduce unemployment duration and encourage full-time work, especially among men, should be targeted towards those aged 25 and over on entering unemployment and on increasing education levels. Mothers are found to have significantly lower exit rates into full-time work than both men and childless women. JEL: J64, C33

متن کاملAccounting for Unemployment: The Long and Short of It
Shimer (2012) accounts for the volatility of unemployment based on a model of homogeneous unemployment. Using data on short-term unemployment he finds that most of unemployment volatility is accounted for by variations in the exit rate from unemployment. The assumption of homogeneous exit rates is inconsistent with the observed negative duration dependence of unemployment exit rates for the U.S...

We investigate how unemployment exit probabilities are affected by economic incentives, spell duration and macroeconomic conditions. Building on a database containing all registered unemployment spells in Norway in 1989-1998, we apply an econometric model in which exit probabilities vary freely over spell durations as well as calendar time. We find that i) the replacement ratio affects the exit...

These expansions were then rolled back in 2012 and 2013. Since January 2014, no state has had UI benefits available beyond the normal duration (26 weeks in most states). Unemployment insurance extensions may raise measur...
متن کاملUnemployment Dynamics and Duratiqn Dependence
One of the major issues in the analysis of unemployment durations concerns the distinction between duration dependence of the exit rate out of unemployment and unobserved heterogeneity. Empirical studies rely heavily on functional form restrictions, which may be hazardous. We present a method for the nonparametric estimation of both phenomena. This method is designed to be applicable to aggrega...
