چکیده

We present millimeter imaging observations in the 1200 μm continuum of the disk around β Pic. With the 25′′ beam, the β Pic disk is unresolved perpendicularly to the disk plane (≤ 10′′), but slightly resolved in the northeast-southwest direction (26′′). Peak emission is observed at the stellar position. A secondary maximum is found 1000AU along the disk plane in the southwest, which does not positionally coincide with a similar feature reported earlier at 850μm. Arguments are presented which could be seen in support of the reality of these features. The observed submm/mm emission is consistent with thermal emission from dust grains, which are significantly larger than those generally found in the interstellar medium, including mm-size particles, and thus more reminiscent of the dust observed in protostellar disks. Modelling the observed scattered light in the visible and the emission in the submm/mm provides evidence for the particles dominating the scattering in the visible/NIR and those primarily responsible for the thermal emission at longer wavelengths belonging to different

Rapid Dissipation of Primordial Gas from the Au Microscopii Debris Disk

The disk around AU Microscopii, an M1 star in the β Pictoris Moving Group, is extraordinarily wellsuited for comparison to the β Pic debris disk (type A5V). We use far-UV absorption spectroscopy of AU Mic to probe its edge-on disk for small amounts of H2, the primary constituent of gas giant planets. Our conservative upper limit on the line-of-sight H2 column density is 1.7 × 10 19 cm, which is...

Rings in the Planetesimal Disk of β Pic

The nearby main sequence star β Pic is surrounded by an edge-on disk of dust produced by the collisional erosion of larger planetesimals. Here we report the discovery of substructure within the northeast extension of the disk midplane that may represent an asymmetric ring system around β Pic. We present a dynamical model showing that a close stellar flyby with a quiescient disk of planetesimals...

Stellar Encounters with the β Pictoris Planetesimal System

We use data from the Hipparcos catalog and the Barbier-Brossat & Figon (2000) catalog of stellar radial velocities to test the hypothesis that the β Pic planetesimal disk was disrupted by a close stellar encounter. We trace the space motions of 21,497 stars and discover 18 that have passed within 5 pc of β Pic in the past 1 Myr. β Pic’s closest encounter is with the K2III star HIP 27628 (∼0.6 p...

The Chord Construction

Let F be a smooth plane curve of degree 3. Let β be an element in Pic(F )[2]− {0}. Let us define F ′ := {p(p+ β)|p ∈ F} ⊂ (P2)∗. In this note we show that F ′ is a smooth embedding of F/β. Moreover, let β′ be the generator of Pic(F )/β, and let p ∈ F be a flex, then p(p+ β) + β′ is a flex on F ′. We present two proofs. 1. Notation. Let F be a smooth curve of genus 1, β ∈ Pic(F )[2]. Let us deno...

J an 2 00 7 Gas Absorption Detected from the Edge - on Debris Disk Surrounding HD 32297

Near-infrared and optical imaging of HD32297 indicate that it has an edgeon debris disk, similar to β Pic. I present high resolution optical spectra of the Na I doublet toward HD32297 and stars in close angular proximity. A circumstellar absorption component is clearly observed toward HD32297 at the stellar radial velocity, which is not observed toward any of its neighbors, including the neares...
