چکیده

SAR images of the sea often show backscatter patterns linked to the horizontal structure of the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL) at the interface with the sea surface. In general, their dimensions are spread over a wide range of length scales, presenting spatial periodicity as well as intermittence. With the aim to isolate such backscatter structures, the two-dimensional Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT2) analysis has been applied to SAR images of the sea. The CWT2 analysis permits to highlight the backscatter cells associated to the structure of MABL, as well as to evidence the structure of the atmospheric gravity waves occurring at the lee side of islands and coast. The cells detected in the range 0.3 km ÷ 4 km are directly associated to the wind spatial structure deriving, in turns, from the turbulent characteristics of the wind flow. They have an elliptic shape, with the major axis along the (aliased) wind direction. Those with size falling inside the spatial range 4 km ÷ 20 km describe, instead, the atmospheric gravity waves structure (if present) and the structures linked to the wind shading. The technique developed is the background for several applications: it has been used to compute the wind fields without any a priori information, as well as to study the inner structure of the Langmuir atmospheric circulation. Other applications could be on the detection of sea surface oil slicks.

Towards the wind direction determination in RADARSAT-2 polarimetric images

The interpretation of SAR images of the sea surface is difficult, due to the complexity of the geophysics and of the interaction mechanisms between electromagnetic and sea waves. The determination of the wind direction is crucial for the evaluation of the wind speed, but its retrieval is still an open issue. One of the few methods able to extract the sea surface wind from SAR data only has been...

Computation of Wind Field from Envisat Asar Wide Swath and Ers Sar Images without Any a Priori Information

A wavelet based methodology has been developed to retrieve the wind field over the sea surface from SAR images without any a-priori information of the wind direction. The method relies on the ability of the twodimensional continuous wavelet technique to detect the spatial structure of the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL). The analysis of the geometric and radiometric characteristics of ...

Wind Direction Extraction from SAR in Coastal Areas

This paper aims to illustrate and test a method, based on the Two-Dimensional Continuous Wavelet Transform (2D-CWT), developed to extract the wind directions from the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. The knowledge of the wind direction is essential to retrieve the wind speed by using the radar-backscatter versus wind speed algorithms. The method has been applied to 61 SAR images from diff...

Speckle Reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images in Wavelet Domain Using Laplace Distribution

Speckle is a granular noise-like phenomenon which appears in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images due to coherent properties of SAR systems. The presence of speckle complicates both human and automatic analysis of SAR images. As a result, speckle reduction is an important preprocessing step for many SAR remote sensing applications. Speckle reduction can be made through multi-looking during the...

Speckle Reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images in Wavelet Domain Exploiting Intra-scale and Inter-scale Dependencies

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are inherently affected by a multiplicative noise-like phenomenon called speckle, which is indeed the nature of all coherent systems. Speckle decreases the performance of almost all the information extraction methods such as classification, segmentation, and change detection, therefore speckle must be suppressed. Despeckling can be applied by the multilooki...
