Heterotrophic cultures of microalgae: metabolism and potential products.

چکیده
This review analyzes the current state of a specific niche of microalgae cultivation; heterotrophic growth in the dark supported by a carbon source replacing the traditional support of light energy. This unique ability of essentially photosynthetic microorganisms is shared by several species of microalgae. Where possible, heterotrophic growth overcomes major limitations of producing useful products from microalgae: dependency on light which significantly complicates the process, increase costs, and reduced production of potentially useful products. As a general role, and in most cases, heterotrophic cultivation is far cheaper, simpler to construct facilities, and easier than autotrophic cultivation to maintain on a large scale. This capacity allows expansion of useful applications from diverse species that is now very limited as a result of elevated costs of autotrophy; consequently, exploitation of microalgae is restricted to small volume of high-value products. Heterotrophic cultivation may allow large volume applications such as wastewater treatment combined, or separated, with production of biofuels. In this review, we present a general perspective of the field, describing the specific cellular metabolisms involved and the best-known examples from the literature and analyze the prospect of potential products from heterotrophic cultures.

In comparison with conventional photo-autotrophic cultivation, heterotrophic and mixotrophic cultivations of microalgae offers a feasible strategy to produce biomass and valuable chemicals through biorefi nery processes. Supplementing microalgae cultures with organic carbon sources increase the biomass production and lipid/carbohydrate contents in cells. Consequently, this yields high productiv...
متن کاملEffect of Lignocellulose Related Compounds on Microalgae Growth and Product Biosynthesis: A Review
Microalgae contain valuable compounds that can be harnessed for industrial applications. Lignocellulose biomass is a plant material containing in abundance organic substances such as carbohydrates, phenolics, organic acids and other secondary compounds. As growth of microalgae on organic substances was confirmed during heterotrophic and mixotrophic cultivation, lignocellulose derived compounds ...

Regarding increasing rate of drug resistance among microbial pathogens, a global search to find new antimicrobial agents from natural compounds with fewer side effects has been considered by many researchers worldwide. Bioactive compounds with good antimicrobial activity have been isolated from different algae and cyanobacteria. The current study was performed to determine antimicrobial potenti...
متن کاملA Review on the Assessment of Stress Conditions for Simultaneous Production of Microalgal Lipids and Carotenoids
Microalgal species are potential resource of both biofuels and high-value metabolites, and their production is growth dependent. Growth parameters can be screened for the selection of novel microalgal species that produce molecules of interest. In this context our review confirms that, autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms have demonstrated a dual potential, namely the ability to produce lipi...
متن کاملEnergetics and carbon metabolism during growth of microalgal cells under photoautotrophic, mixotrophic and cyclic light-autotrophic/dark-heterotrophic conditions.
Chlorella pyrenoidosa was cultivated under photoautotrophic, mixotrophic and cyclic light-autotrophic/dark-heterotrophic conditions. The influence of light on the carbon and energy metabolism of microalgae was investigated by the use of metabolic flux analysis. The respiratory activity of microalgae in the light was assessed from the autotrophic flux distribution. Results showed that the glycol...
