چکیده

The noise contained in data measured by imaging instruments is often primarily of Poisson type. This motivates, in many cases, the use of the Poisson likelihood functional in place of the ubiquitous least squares data fidelity when solving image deblurring problems. We assume that the underlying blurring operator is compact, so that, as in the least squares case, the resulting minimization problem is illposed and must be regularized. In this paper, we focus on total variation regularization and show that the problem of computing the minimizer of the resulting total variationpenalized Poisson likelihood functional is well-posed. We then prove that, as the errors in the data and in the blurring operator tend to zero, the resulting minimizers converge to the minimizer of the exact likelihood function. Finally, the practical effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated on synthetically generated data, and a nonnegatively constrained, projected quasi-Newton method is introduced. Regularization Parameter Selection Methods for Ill-Posed Poisson Maximum Likelihood Estimation

In image processing applications, image intensity is often measured via the counting of incident photons emitted by the object of interest. In such cases, image data-noise is accurately modeled by a Poisson distribution. This motivates the use of Poisson maximum likelihood estimation for image reconstruction. However, when the underlying model equation is ill-posed, regularization is needed. Re...

Penalized Maximum Likelihood Estimation for Univariate Normal Mixture Distributions

Due to singularities of the likelihood function, the maximum likelihood approach for the estimation of the parameters of normal mixture models is an acknowledged ill posed optimization problem. Ill posedness is solved by penalizing the likelihood function. In the Bayesian framework, it amounts to incorporating an inverted gamma prior in the likelihood function. A penalized version of the EM alg...

Automatic Smoothing and Variable Selection via Regularization

This thesis focuses on developing computational methods and the general theory of automatic smoothing and variable selection via regularization. Methods of regularization are a commonly used technique to get stable solution to ill-posed problems such as nonparametric regression and classification. In recent years, methods of regularization have also been successfully introduced to address a cla...

An Efficient Computational Method for Total Variation-penalized Poisson Likelihood Estimation

Approximating non-Gaussian noise processes with Gaussian models is standard in data analysis. This is due in large part to the fact that Gaussian models yield parameter estimation problems of least squares form, which have been extensively studied both from the theoretical and computational points of view. In image processing applications, for example, data is often collected by a CCD camera, i...

Total Variation Based Image Restoration of Three Dimensional Microscopic Objects

The inverse problem involving the determination of a three-dimensional biological structure from images obtained by means of optical-sectioning microscopy is ill-posed. Regularization methods must often be used in order to obtain a reasonable solution. Recently, the Total Variation (TV) regularization, as proposed b y Rudin, Osher and Fatemi [ll], has become very popular for this purpose. A n i...
