Modeling wind-driven circulation in Lake Ladoga
نویسنده
چکیده
The goal of this paper is to present circulation patterns in Lake Ladoga occurring during episodes of strong wind. Hydrodynamics of episodic events are studied with a three-dimensional barotropic numerical model. Model results are presented for a variety of wind directions and, therefore, can be used for analysis of various biogeochemical data. As an illustration, an analysis of sediment distribution in Lake Ladoga is presented. It is suggested that location of maximum sediment deposition in southeastern Lake Ladoga is due to sediment transport during episodes of strong northwesterly winds. These events generate signifi ca t waves in southern Lake Ladoga, causing sediment resuspension and subsequent offshore advection and deposition.

متن کاملThe 1998 Coastal Turbidity Plume in Lake Michigan
In this paper, numerical models of coastal circulation, wind-waves, and sediment transport are applied to the March 1998 turbidity plume event in Lake Michigan to investigate the role of wind-induced circulation in the offshore transport of sedimentary material in Lake Michigan. Computer visualization is used to compare model results to the evidence of cross-isobath transport suggested in satel...
متن کاملA Three- Dimensional Model of the Caspian Sea
Observations of the Caspian Sea during August-September 1995 are used to develop a three-dimensional numerical model to be used in calculating temperature and current. The model has variable grid resolution and horizontal smoothing that filters out small scale vertical motion. Data from the meteorological buoy network on the Caspian Sea are combined with routine observations at first-order syno...

متن کاملDistribution of periphytic diatoms in the rivers of the Lake Ladoga basin (Northwestern Russia)
Relationships between distribution of periphytic diatoms and environmental variables in 19 rivers of the Lake Ladoga basin (Northwestern Russia) were examined using gradient analysis. On the basis of geology and river water chemistry, the Lake Ladoga basin could be separated into twomain parts, the northern and the southern sub-basin. The rivers in the northern sub-basin are slightly acidic and...
