High Dimensions and Heavy Tails for NES

چکیده
The family of natural evolution strategies (NES) offers a principled approach to real-valued evolutionary optimization by following the natural gradient of the expected fitness on the parameters of its search distribution. While general in its formulation, existing research has focused only on multivariate Gaussian search distributions. We address this shortcoming by exhibiting problem classes for which other search distributions are more appropriate, and then derive the corresponding NES-variants. First, we show how simplifying NES to separable distributions reduces its complexity from O(d) to O(d), and apply it to problems of previously unattainable dimensionality, recovering lowest-energy structures on the Lennard-Jones atom clusters and state-of-the-art results on neuro-evolution benchmarks. Second, we develop a new, equivalent formulation based on invariances, which allows us to generalize NES to heavy-tailed distributions, even if their variance is undefined. We then investigate how this variant aids in overcoming deceptive local optima.

Robust Estimation of Transition Matrices in High Dimensional Heavy-tailed Vector Autoregressive Processes
Gaussian vector autoregressive (VAR) processes have been extensively studied in the literature. However, Gaussian assumptions are stringent for heavy-tailed time series that frequently arises in finance and economics. In this paper, we develop a unified framework for modeling and estimating heavy-tailed VAR processes. In particular, we generalize the Gaussian VAR model by an elliptical VAR mode...
متن کاملFormation and stability of Vitamin E nano-emulsion based delivery systems by spontaneous emulsification method: Glycerol as a co-solvent
There is considerable interest in using nano-emulsions (NEs) as delivery systems for lipophilicbioactive ingredients. In this study, the influence of G on the properties of vitamin E (VE) enriched NEsprepared using spontaneous emulsification (SE) method, were investigated. The particle size and optical clarityof the NEs depended strongly on the co-solvent presence, absence, an...
متن کاملHeavy tails in last-passage percolation
We consider last-passage percolation models in two dimensions, in which the underlying weight distribution has a heavy tail of index α < 2. We prove scaling laws and asymptotic distributions, both for the passage times and for the shape of optimal paths; these are expressed in terms of a family (indexed by α) of “continuous last-passage percolation” models in the unit square. In the extreme cas...

Optimal Nonlinear Energy Sink (NES) is employed in vibration suppression of the beams subjected to successive moving loads in this paper. As a real application, a typical railway bridge is dynamically modeled by a single-span beam and a traveling high-speed train is simulated by a series of successive moving loads. Genetic algorithm is employed as the optimization technique and optimal paramete...

In this paper, we show how the sampling properties of Hurst exponent methods of estimation change with the presence of heavy tails. We run extensive Monte Carlo simulations to find out how rescaled range analysis (R/S), multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF − DFA), detrending moving average (DMA) and generalized Hurst exponent approach (GHE) estimate Hurst exponent on independent seri...
