FSA3131 Guidelines for Choosing Self-Fed Supplements for Beef Cattle

چکیده
Shane Gadberry, Ph.D. Associate Professor Animal Science Feeding supplemental protein or energy to beef cattle consuming a foragebased diet should be viewed as an investment in cattle health and performance. Considering the large selection of supplemental feeds avail able, selecting the right feed is a daunting task. As an investment, supplemental feed is necessary to complement the forage resources, which may be insufficient to maintain herd productivity.

Nutritional Disorders in Beef Cattle - FSA3071
Nutritional disorders associated with both forage and feed consump tion can have a large impact on the profitability of beef cattle operations. Forages are an important component of beef cattle production systems in Arkansas. Most cowcalf and stocker cattle enterprises in Arkansas rely heavily on foragebased nutritional programs. Forages are used for both livestock grazing and hay production...
متن کاملCosts and Benefits of Beef Cattle Fattening Schemes in some Selected Areas of North West Tanzania
This study highlights the costs and benefits of indigenous beef cattle fattening schemes in Shinyanga Urban and Kishapu Districts in Tanzania. Specifically, in this study the net profit (NP) for fatteners between beef cattle fattening schemes has been determined. The schemes were divided into two main categories, scheme 1 in which the animals were fed on cottonseed hulls (CSHL) based diets and ...
متن کاملRecent Research on Liquid Supplements for Beef Cattle
A recent survey (Williams, 1995) indicated that over 1.7 million tons of liquid feed were manufactured in the 1994-95 production year. An estimated 45% (708,000 tons) of this liquid feed was used in feedlot diets and 55% (960,000 tons) was specified as non-feedlot and presumably most of this was fed to cattle on forage based diets. Past estimates of liquid feed tonnage indicate it has grown an ...
متن کاملEffect of dietary canola on fatty acid composition of bovine adipose tissue, muscle, kidney, and liver.
The purpose of this study was to determine effects of feeding canola and soybean products as protein supplements on fatty acid composition of adipose tissue and muscle of slaughter bulls and steers and on fatty acid composition of kidney and liver total lipids of bulls. Products included canola meal (CM), extruded canola (EC, full-fat), ground canola (GC, full-fat), soybean meal (SBM), and extr...
متن کاملEffects of supplemental energy and/or degradable intake protein on performance, grazing behavior, intake, digestibility, and fecal and blood indices by beef steers grazed on dormant native tallgrass prairie.
To evaluate the effects of balancing total diet degradable intake protein with dietary total digestible nutrients (TDN), we conducted two studies during 2 yr with 100 (302 +/- 8 kg initial BW) mixed-breed yearling steers and 12 ruminally cannulated steers (526 +/- 28 kg). Steers individually received one of four supplements 5 d/wk while grazing dormant native tallgrass prairie. Supplements incl...
