Internal Stress as a Link between Macroscale and Mesoscale Mechanics

چکیده
The internal (or residual) stress is among the key notions to describe the state of the systems far from equilibrium. Such stress is invisible on the macroscopic scale where the system is regarded as a black-box. Yet nonequilibrium macroscopic operations allow to create and observe the internal stress. We present in this lecture some examples of the internal stress and its operations. We describe the memory effect in some detail, the process in which the history of past operations is recalled through the relaxation of internal stress.

Multiscale Analysis of Transverse Cracking in Cross-Ply Laminated Beams Using the Layerwise Theory
A finite element model based on the layerwise theory is developed for the analysis of transverse cracking in cross-ply laminated beams. The numerical model is developed using the layerwise theory of Reddy, and the von Kármán type nonlinear strain field is adopted to accommodate the moderately large rotations of the beam. The finite element beam model is verified by comparing the present numeric...
متن کاملMetric-Resolution 2D River Modeling at the Macroscale: Computational Methods and Applications in a Braided River
Metric resolution digital terrain models (DTMs) of rivers now make it possible for multi-dimensional fluid mechanics models to be applied to characterize flow at fine scales that are relevant to studies of river hydraulic geometry (HG) and ecological habitat, or microscales. These developments are important for managing rivers because of the potential to better understand system dynamics, anthr...
متن کاملTurbulence-Augmented Minimization of Combustion Time in Mesoscale Internal Combustion Engines
Mesoscale internal combustion engines for a variety of new combustion system applications have dimensions that are far smaller than conventional macroscale engines, yet unlike true microscale engines allow significant mean flow and turbulence to be created in the combustion chamber by the injection process. The resulting flow allows minimization of the combustion time by augmenting flame propag...
متن کاملClimatic and thermal comfort research orientations in outdoor spaces: From 1999 to 2017 in Iran
The level of satisfaction with an environment differs among individuals, which may be caused by social, psychological and physical factors. One of the environmental factors affecting physical and mental satisfaction, is the thermal condition of space. In recent years, the importance of thermal comfort has been accentuated due to the climate change and global warming, increasing the number of st...
متن کاملActive microrheology of Chaetopterus mucus determines three intrinsic lengthscales that govern material properties
We characterize the scale-dependent rheological properties of mucus from the Chaetopterus sea annelid and determine the intrinsic lengthscales controlling distinct rheological and structural regimes. The mucus produced by this ubiquitous filter feeder serves a host of roles including filtration, protection and trapping nutrients. The ease of clean mucus extraction coupled with similarities to h...
