A Very High Head Pump

چکیده
Preliminary process design in 1997 for a new grass roots polymer unit in the Gulf Coast raised the possibility of using a single centrifugal pump instead of two reciprocating compressors to feed ethylene into the reactors. The objectives of this change were lower capital cost, energy consumption, and maintenance expense. Discussion of the possible application led finally to the design, manufacture, and successful operation of two full-capacity horizontal centrifugal pumps, one operating, the other on autostart standby, each developing 22,500 ft (6860 m) in a single casing. This paper addresses the design philosophy chosen for these pumps, critical steps in their detail design, manufacturing issues, additional testing on water to verify the design to the extent possible before operation on ethylene, and the correction of fluctuating rotor instability evident in one of the pumps at startup in July 2000.

Numerical Study of the tongue geometry effects on the cavitation and performance of a centrifugal pump in off-design conditions
In this study, the effects of the volute tongue geometry variation on the head, efficiency, velocity distribution and cavitation structure of a centrifugal pump in the steady flow behavior under off-design conditions have been investigated. Numerical simulation modeling based on the turbulence model with a hybrid grid is used to simulate the flow within the modeled pump. The flow is simulated ...
متن کاملAn Experimental Investigation into the Effects of High Viscosity and Foamy Oil Rheology on a Centrifugal Pump Performance
This paper presents the effect of high viscosity oil and two-phase foamy-oil flow on the performance of a single stage centrifugal pump. As a part of this, the applicability of a pipe viscometer to determine the foamy oil viscosity is investigated. Unlike previous studies, a sealed fluid tank is used in a closed flow loop to allow conditioning the two-phase mixture to create foamy-oil. Furtherm...

متن کاملWaterhammer Caused by Intermittent Pump Failure in Pipe Systems Including Parallel Pump Groups
The use of pumps linked in parallel or series in large scale pipe systems is usually inevitable, to meet the required head and discharge. Transient flow occurs following a pump failure in a pump group as a result of variations in the flow rate. This research is an investigation about waterhammer caused by one or more pump-switch off in a pump group when they are connected in parallel. The opera...
متن کاملEffect of Impeller Blade Exit Angle on the Performance of Centrifugal Pump
-Changing some geometric characteristic of the impeller in centrifugal pumps improves their performance. It is known that blade exit angle plays very important role in the performance of a centrifugal pump. To investigate effect of blade exit angle on the performance of centrifugal pump by means of experiment is very expensive and lengthy process. Due to expensive and lengthy process, it can be...
متن کاملThe cost-effectiveness of high-dose oral proton pump inhibition after endoscopy in the acute treatment of peptic ulcer bleeding.
BACKGROUND Recent data suggest a role for high-dose oral proton pump inhibition in ulcer bleeding. AIM To compare the cost-effectiveness of oral high-dose proton pump inhibition to both high-dose intravenous proton pump inhibition and placebo administration. METHODS The model adopted a 30-day time horizon, and focused on patients with ulcer haemorrhage initially treated endoscopically for h...
