چکیده

J. L. Han National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100012, PR China E-mail: [email protected] A sample of classical IntraDay Variable (IDV) and IDV candidate sources has been monitored with the Urumqi 25m telescope and the Effelsberg 100m telescope. Aim of the project is to investigate the origin of IntraDay Variability, a phenomenon which has been observed in about 30% of flat spectrum radio quasars. Simultaneous Effelsberg-Urumqi observations demonstrated that the Urumqi antenna, although relatively small in diameter, is well suitable for IDV experiments. A few Urumqi datasets, however, turned out to be affected by a spurious ∼ 24 hours modulation, an effect which has been removed by means of a new procedure for data reduction. In about 14 months, 12 epochs of observation have been collected, for a total observing time of more than 45 days. The epochs are regularly distributed over the whole year, in order to check for the presence of systematic annual changes in the variability time scales a crucial test for verifying the consistency of source-extrinsic models of the variability. Preliminary time-analysis of the monitored sources revealed some hint for a slowing down of the characteristic time scales of S5 0716+714, a result that, if confirmed, would be compatible with a source-extrinsic origin of the variability, in contrast to previous IDV studies. No significant modulation of the time scales has been detected for S4 0954+658. Very Long Baseline Array observations of the Intraday Variable source J 1128 + 592

Context. Short time-scale flux density variations of flat spectrum radio sources are often explained by the scattering of radio waves in the turbulent ionized Interstellar Matter of the Milky Way. One of the most convincing observational arguments in favor of this is the annual modulation of the variability time-scale caused by the Earth orbital motion around the Sun. J1128+5925 is a recently d...

Intraday Variability in Northern Hemisphere Radio Sources

We summarize results from flux density monitoring campaigns performed with the 100 m radio-telescope at Effelsberg and the VLA during the past 15 yrs. We briefly discuss some of the statistical properties from now more than 40 high declination sources (δ ≥ 30◦), which show Intraday Variability (IDV). In general, IDV is more pronounced for sources with flat radio spectra and compact VLBI structu...

Radio properties of the low surface brightness SNR G 65 . 2 + 5 . 7 ⋆

Context. SNR G65.2+5.7 is one of few supernova remnants (SNRs) that have been optically detected. It is exceptionally bright in X-rays and the optical [O III]-line. Its low surface brightness and large diameter ensure that radio observations of SNR G65.2+5.7 are technically difficult and thus have hardly been completed. Aims. Many physical properties of this SNR, such as spectrum and polarizati...

Non–thermal Emission from Extragalactic Radio Sources: a High Resolution – Broad Band Approach

In the framework of the study of extragalactic radio sources, we will focus on the importance of the spatial resolution at different wavelengths, and of the combination of observations at different frequency bands. In particular, a substantial step forward in this field is now provided by the new generation X-ray telescopes which are able to image radio sources in between 0.1–10 keV with a spat...

The IDV source J 1128 + 5925 , a new candidate for annual modulation ?

Context. Short time-scale radio variations of compact extragalactic radio sources, known as IntraDay Variability (IDV), can be explained in at least some sources by a source-extrinsic effect, in which the variations are interpreted as scintillation of radio waves caused by the turbulent interstellar medium of the Milky Way. One of the most convincing observational arguments in favour of propaga...
