Full Solution of an Endogenous Sorting Model with Contextual and Income Effects

چکیده
The paper solves analytically a problem where individuals sort themselves into neighborhoods because they value average schooling among adults in the neighborhood. The paper extends results by Nesheim (2002) but with the addition of income effects on neighborhood choice. Individuals value housing, non-housing consumption, and expected schooling of their children. The latter depends on parental schooling, on a child’s ability, and on average schooling in the neighborhood. Neighborhood choice trades off non-housing consumption with children’s expected schooling. Individuals choose neighborhoods recognizing that their neighbors’ characteristics are correlated with their own. The equilibrium housing price is associated with endogenous sorting and also allows computation of neighborhood distributions of income, of schooling and other variables of interest. * The results of this paper were reported originally in my “Neighborhood Effects and Housing,” version March 3, 2008, Handbook of Social Economics, Jess Benhabib, Alberto Bisin, and Matthew O. Jackson, eds., Elsevier, forthcoming. I thank Bryan Graham for sharing with me his “On the Identification of Neighborhood Externalities in the Presence of Endogenous Neighborhood Selection,” June 26, 2008. The usual caveats apply. Estimating Optimum Value of Investment and Human Capital in the R&D Sector of Iran Using an Augmented Endogenous Growth Model
This article intends to estimate the optimal value of investment and human capital in R&D sector of Iranian economy using an augmented endogenous growth model. To do so, two issues have been studied. First, an endogenous growth model has been extended to include investment in R&D as an independent variable. In the framework of this model, in order to determine the optimal value of investment an...
متن کاملInteractions , Neighborhood Selection and Housing Demand
This paper contributes to the growing literature that identifies and measures the impact of social context on individual economic behavior. We develop a model of housing demand with neighborhood effects and neighborhood choice. Modelling neighborhood choice is of fundamental importance in estimating and understanding endogenous and exogenous neighborhood effects. That is, to obtain unbiased est...
متن کاملNeighbourhood Income Sorting and the Effects of Neighbourhood Income Mix on Income: A Holistic Empirical Exploration
An econometric model is specified in which an individual’s income and the income mix of the neighbourhood in which the individual resides are endogenous, thus providing a holistic model of phenomena that previously have been fragmented into neighbourhood effects and neighbourhood selection literatures. To overcome the biases from selection and endogeneity, the parameters of this model are estim...
متن کاملThe Implications of Heterogeneous Preferences for Environmental Zoning
This paper examines the effects of environmental zoning policies on lakefront land development, sorting, and economic welfare in a model where agents are heterogeneous in preferences and income. Agents consume lakefront amenities that are endogenous to development and the sorting process yields lakes which differ by amenities and frontage prices. Our findings include the following: i) lakes bec...
متن کاملMulti-objective robust optimization model for social responsible closed-loop supply chain solved by non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm
In this study a supply chain network design model has been developed considering both forward and reverse flows through the supply chain. Total Cost, environmental factors such as CO2 emission, and social factors such as employment and fairness in providing job opportunities are considered in three separate objective functions. The model seeks to optimize the facility location proble...
