چکیده
In-some areas in which goiter is endemic there is a high prevalence of mental deficiency without any other stigma of cretinism (1-6). When surveying the populations of Tocachi and La Esperanza in highland Ecuador in which goiter is endemic we were impressed by the high prevalence of mental deficiency in the general population; This generalized mental deficiency was in dependent of the typical cases of cretinism. We believe that several factors such as protein-caloric malnutrition and chronic iodine deficiency may contribute toward producing this mental deficit. All of these factors exist in the populations studied.

Iodine as Essential Nutrient during the First 1000 Days of Life
Iodine is an essential micronutrient incorporated into thyroid hormones. Although iodine deficiency can lead to a broad spectrum of disorders throughout life, it is most critical in the early stages of development, as the foetal brain is extremely dependent on iodine supply. During the last two decades, our understanding of thyroid physiology during gestation has substantially improved. Further...

متن کاملA Comparison of the Effect of Training on Life Skills and Mindfulness-based Reducing Stress upon Emotional Quotient in Schoolgirls
The present research aims to compare the effect of training on life skills and mindfulness-based reducing stress upon emotional quotient in schoolgirls. A semi-empirical method (i.e., pre-test and post-test) was devised for the research, which included a test group and a control group. 60 ninth-grade students with lower grades on the Bar-On Eq-i scale (1997) were selected by means of convenienc...

متن کاملEffect of inadequate iodine status in UK pregnant women on cognitive outcomes in their children: results from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC).
BACKGROUND As a component of thyroid hormones, iodine is essential for fetal brain development. Although the UK has long been considered iodine replete, increasing evidence suggests that it might now be mildly iodine deficient. We assessed whether mild iodine deficiency during early pregnancy was associated with an adverse effect on child cognitive development. METHODS We analysed mother-chil...
