Calculating Gravitational Radiation from Collisions
نویسنده
چکیده
The development of both groundand space-based gravitational wave detectors provides new opportunities to observe the radiation from binaries containing neutron stars and black holes. Numerical simulations in 3-D are essential for calculating the coalescence waveforms, and comprise some of the most challenging problems in astrophysics today. This article briefly reviews the current status of efforts to calculate black hole and neutron star coalescences, and highlights challenges for the future.

Generation of Electromagnetic Radiation by a Time Varying Gravitational Potential in Collisions of Astronomical Objects
A time varying space-time metric is shown to be a source of electromagnetic radiation. The post-Newtonian approximation is used as a realistic model of the connection between the space-time metric and a time varying gravitational potential. Large variations in the gravitational potential, during collisions of black holes or relativistic stars, are associated with the electromagnetic power spect...

There is a lot of current interest in sources of gravitational waves and active ongoing projects to detect such radiation, such as the LIGO project. These are long wavelength, low frequency gravitational waves. LISA would be sensitive to much longer wavelengths and lower fluxes. However compact stellar objects can generate high frequency (10 16 -10 21 Hz) thermal gravitational radiation, which ...
متن کاملAn Analytic Approach to the CMB Polarization Generated by Relic Gravitational Waves
We develop Polnarev’s analytic method to calculate of the polarization power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) generated by cosmic relic gravitational waves. In this analytic approach the physics involved in this process is more transparent. Consequently, the effects due to various elements of physics can be isolated easily. In numerically calculating the evolution of ...
متن کاملThe gravitational wave signature of young and dense star clusters
Young star clusters are often born with such high stellar densities that stellar collisions play an important role in their further evolution. In such environments the same star may participate in several tens to hundreds of collisions ultimately leading to the collapse of the star to a black hole of intermediate mass. At later time the black hole may acquire a companion star by tidal capture o...
