Mixed Methods Using Standard Conforming Finite Elements

چکیده
We investigate the mixed finite element method (MFEM) for solving a second order elliptic problem with a lowest order term, as might arise in the simulation of single phase flow in porous media. We find that traditional mixed finite element spaces are not necessary when a positive lowest order (i.e., reaction) term is present. Hence we propose to use standard conforming finite elements Qk × (Qk) on rectangles or Pk × (Pk) on simplices to solve for both the pressure and velocity field in d dimensions. The price we pay is that we have only sub-optimal order error estimates. With a delicate superconvergence analysis, we find some improvement for the simplest pair Qk × (Qk) with any k ≥ 1, or for P1 × (P1), when the mesh is uniform and the solution has one extra order of regularity. We also prove similar results for both parabolic and second order hyperbolic problems. Numerical results using Q1×(Q1) and P1×(P1) are presented in support of our analysis. These observations allow us to simplify the implementation of the MFEM, especially for higher order approximations, as might arise in an hp-adaptive procedure. Non-conforming Computational Methods for Mixed Elasticity Problems
Abstract — In this paper, we present a non-conforming hp computational modeling methodology for solving elasticity problems. We consider the incompressible elasticity model formulated as a mixed displacement-pressure problem on a global domain which is partitioned into several local subdomains. The approximation within each local subdomain is designed using div-stable hp-mixed finite elements. ...
متن کاملA 3d Conforming-nonconforming Mixed Finite Element for Solving Symmetric Stress Stokes Equations
We propose a 3D conforming-nonconforming mixed finite element for solving symmetric stress Stokes equations. The low-order conforming finite elements are not inf-sup stable. The low-order nonconforming finite elements do not satisfy the Korn inequality. The proposed finite element space consists of two conforming components and one nonconforming component. We prove that the discrete inf-sup con...
متن کاملMixed finite element methods for stationary incompressible magneto-hydrodynamics
A new mixed variational formulation of the equations of stationary incompressible magneto–hydrodynamics is introduced and analyzed. The formulation is based on curl-conforming Sobolev spaces for the magnetic variables and is shown to be well-posed in (possibly non-convex) Lipschitz polyhedra. A finite element approximation is proposed where the hydrodynamic unknowns are discretized by standard ...
متن کاملThe Coupling of Mixed and Conforming Finite Element Discretizations
In this paper, we introduce and analyze a special mortar finite element method. We restrict ourselves to the case of two disjoint subdomains, and use RaviartThomas finite elements in one subdomain and conforming finite elements in the other. In particular, this might be interesting for the coupling of different models and materials. Because of the different role of Dirichlet and Neumann boundar...
متن کاملNonconforming elements in least-squares mixed finite element methods
In this paper we analyze the finite element discretization for the first-order system least squares mixed model for the second-order elliptic problem by means of using nonconforming and conforming elements to approximate displacement and stress, respectively. Moreover, on arbitrary regular quadrilaterals, we propose new variants of both the rotated Q1 nonconforming element and the lowest-order ...
