Criticality of lateral inhibition for edge enhancement in neural systems

چکیده
Although the role of lateral inhibition in edge (contrast) enhancement is well known, it has not been parametrized. This paper investigates the imbalance between the lateral inhibitory and excitatory stimuli and its effect on the edge enhancement and stability. It is shown that this imbalance can be expressed through g, a ratio of inhibitory to excitatory weights in a neuron. Stability requires g to be less than the critical ratio Y. As g approaches Y, edge enhancement increases, the rise being the sharpest just before instability. The increase in edge enhancement is also accompanied by an increase in the lateral spread of perturbations across the neuron layer. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Lateral Inhibition (LI) phenomena occur in a wide range of neural sensory modalities, but are most famously described in the visual system of humans and other animals. The general mechanism can be summarised as when a stimulated neuron is itself excited and also suppresses the activity of its local neighbours via inhibitory connections. The effect is to generate an increase in contrast between ...
متن کاملNeural avalanches at the edge-of-chaos?
Does the brain operate at criticality, to optimize neural computation? Literature uses different fingerprints of criticality in neural networks, leaving the relationship between them mostly unclear. Here, we compare two specific signatures of criticality, and ask whether they refer to observables at the same critical point, or to two differing phase transitions. Using a recurrent spiking neural...
متن کاملLateral inhibition between spatially adjacent spatial-frequency channels?
A new lateral inhibitory phenomenon is suggested between spatially neighboring channels that detect similar spatial frequencies. This mechanism tends to enhance the apparent contrast of gratings at their boundaries, and Mach-band-type effects are demonstrated at the edge of a suprathreshold half-field grating. We studied the dependence of this effect on the grating parameters of spatial frequen...
متن کاملProneural enhancement by Notch overcomes Suppressor-of-Hairless repressor function in the developing Drosophila eye
BACKGROUND The receptor protein Notch plays a conserved role in restricting neural-fate specification during lateral inhibition. Lateral inhibition requires the Notch intracellular domain to coactivate Su(H)-mediated transcription of the Enhancer-of-split Complex. During Drosophila eye development, Notch plays an additional role in promoting neural fate independently of Su(H) and E(spl)-C, and ...
متن کاملStructure of the orifice of the renal artery in the abdominal aorta in adult male dog
One of the locations of renal artery atherosclerosis is at the orifice of the renal artery, therefore thestructure of this orifice was assessed in 6 normal, adult male dogs by light microscopy (LM) andtransmission electron microscopy (TEM). For the LM study, processed tissues were embedded in paraffinand sectioned serially into 6-μm thickness. Sections were stained with orcein. For the TEM stud...
