Release and consumption of DMSP from Emiliania huxleyi during grazing b y Oxyrrhis marina

چکیده
Degradation and release to solution of intracellular dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) from Emiliania huxleyi 370 was observed during grazing by the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina in 24 h bottle incubations. Between 30 and 70 % of the lost algal DMSP was metabolized by the grazers without production of dimethylsulfide (DMS) when grazer densities were 150 to 450 m l ' The rest was released to solution and about 30% was converted to DMS by bacteria associated with the grazer culture. These experiments demonstrate that grazing by herbivorous protists may be an important sink for DMSP in marine waters, removing a potential source of DMS. Microzooplankton grazing may also indirectly increase the production of DMS by transferring algal DMSP to the dissolved pool, making it available for bacterial n~etabolism.

متن کاملPreferential grazing of Oxyrrhis marina on virus-infected Emiliania huxleyi
We examined whether virus infection of Emiliania huxleyi with the lytic E. huxleyi-specific virus, EhV-86, influenced it’s palatability to the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina. E. huxleyi mortality was assessed by comparing changes in the algae’s concentration between four different incubations: (1) Grazer O. marina plus an equal concentration of infected and healthy E. huxleyi prey...
متن کاملInfectious titers of Emiliania huxleyi virus 86 are reduced by exposure to millimolar dimethyl sulfide and acrylic acid
We examined the ability of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), its cleavage products dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and acrylic acid (AA), and the oxidized form of DMS dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), to inhibit infection of Emiliania huxleyi virus 86 (EhV-86). Infectivity was assessed by plaque assay of viral stock that had been exposed to these compounds. The initial concentrations of the compounds tested we...
متن کاملGrazing-activated production of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) by two clones of Emiliania huxleyi
Emiliania huxleyi clones CCMP 370 and CCMP 373 produced similar amounts of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) during axenic exponential growth, averaging 109 mM internal DMSP. Both clones had detectable DMSP lyase activity, as measured by production of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) during in vitro assays of crude cell preparations, but activities and conditions differed considerably between clones. Clo...
متن کاملTemperature, light, and the dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) content of Emiliania huxleyi (Prymnesiophyceae)
The precursor of the volatile S-compound dimethylsulfide (DMS), dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), is produced by marine microalgae, notably by Prymnesiophyceae. The production of DMSP by an axenic isolate of Emiliania huxleyi (Lohm.) Hay et Mohler under different temperature and light conditions was studied as a first step towards understanding the role of DMSP-producing algae in climate regul...
