چکیده

Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a syndrome in which the inflammatory component of disease is an identifying criterion for histological diagnosis, but not addressed in clinical diagnosis or treatment. Two parasites, Sarcocystis neurona or Neospora hughesi, are generally believed to be the cause EPM in horses. Elucidating the nature of the immune response in EPM, determining how S neurona causes disease and whether organisms need to be present to cause pathologic changes and clinical signs remain the highest priority areas identified by scientists.6 The purpose of this study was to detect S fayeri antitoxin in horses using a synthetic peptide representing a partial sequence of S fayeri-toxin, determine the prevalence of S fayeri antitoxin in horses with neuromuscular disease, and associate clinical disease to inflammation using serum

Defining Relapses Attributed to Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis

Disease caused by Sarcocystis spp are associated with a variety of clinical signs including abortion, hemorrhages, hair loss, muscular disease, and neurological dysfunction. In horses, clinical disease is associated with Sarcocystis fayeri and S neurona. The genesis of and clinical progression of disease caused by these protozoans in horses is not well defined but acute, chronic, and relapsing ...

Detection of antibodies against Sarcocystis neurona, Neospora spp., and Toxoplasma gondii in horses from Costa Rica.

Serum samples from 315 horses from Costa Rica, Central America, were examined for the presence of antibodies against Sarcocystis neurona, Neospora spp., and Toxoplasma gondii by using the surface antigen (SAG) SnSAG2 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the NhSAG1 ELISA, and the modified agglutination test, respectively. Anti- S. neurona antibodies were found in 42.2% of the horses by usi...

Clinical and Serum Antibody Responses of S. neurona Infected Horses Treated with Decoquinate and Levamisole

Sarcocystis neurona are apicomplexan parasites that can cause mortality in domestic and wild animals. Twelve antigen types are described for S. neurona, however just two phenotypes (SnSAG 1 and SnSAG 5) represent the majority of those that are associated with disease. A novel S. falcatula gene, antigenically indistinct from SnSAG 6, was cloned into an expression vector and the recombinant prote...

Inoculation of Sarcocystis neurona merozoites into the central nervous system of horses.

Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a neurologic syndrome in horses from the Americas and is usually caused by infection with the apicomplexan parasite, Sarcocystis neurona. A horse model of EPM is needed to test the efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents and potential vaccines. Five horses that were negative for antibodies to S. neurona in their serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were in...

Effects of Experimental Sarcocystis neurona-Induced Infection on Immunity in an Equine Model

Sarcocystis neurona is the most common cause of Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM), affecting 0.5-1% horses in the United States during their lifetimes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the equine immune responses in an experimentally induced Sarcocystis neurona infection model. Neurologic parameters were recorded prior to and throughout the 70-day study by blinded investigator...
