Internal jugular vein cannulation without the risk of double wall punctures

چکیده
Dear Editor, Ultrasound guidance does not always guarantee a successful cannulation and lack of complications.[1] Thus, an ultrasound of the internal jugular vein (IJV) with a maximum diameter of <7 mm is associated with decreased cannulation success.[2] The vein puncture with a small diameter may result in double wall punctures. As a consequence, the carotid artery injury, nerve, and pleura damages may result from double wall punctures.[3] The valsalva maneuver and the trendelenburg position are considered to be well-known methods for increasing the size of the IJV. Application of these maneuvers in emergency medicine may be limited.

Ultrasound-guided internal jugular venous cannulation in infants: a prospective comparison with the traditional palpation method.
BACKGROUND Percutaneous cannulation of the internal jugular vein in infants is technically more difficult and carries a higher risk of carotid artery puncture than in older children and adults. In this prospective study, the authors tested their hypothesis that using an ultrasound scanner would increase the success of internal jugular cannulation and decrease the incidence of carotid artery pun...
متن کاملA randomized crossover study comparing a novel needle guidance technology for simulated internal jugular vein cannulation.
BACKGROUND Despite ultrasound guidance for central line placement, complications persist, as exact needle location is often difficult to confirm with standard two-dimension ultrasound. A novel real-time needle guidance technology has recently become available (eZono, Germany) that tracks the needle during insertion. This randomized, blinded, crossover study examined whether this needle guidance...
متن کاملEF FECTS OF THE VALSALVA MANEUVER AND HEAD ROTATION ON INTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN DIAMETER AND LOCATION BY ULTRASONOGRAPHY
In order to determine the effect of Valsalva maneuver and head rotation on the internal jugular vein (IJV) diameter and cross-sectional area and overlap with the carotid artery (CA) and find the best technique for safe cannulation of the IJV and decrease the risk of CA puncture, the diameter of both the IJV and the CA and percentage of overlap between the two vessels and cross-sectional are...
متن کاملAn Ultrasound Study of Cerebral Venous Drainage after Internal Jugular Vein Catheterization
Objectives. It has been advocated that internal jugular vein (IJV) cannulation in patients at risk for intracranial hypertension could impair cerebral venous return. Aim of this study was to demonstrate that ultrasound-guided IJV cannulation in elective neurosurgical patients is safe and does not impair cerebral venous return. Methods. IJV cross-sectional diameter and flow were measured using t...
