Globalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2007 / 04 The returns to exporting : Evidence from UK firms

چکیده
The question of learning versus self-selection has dominated the micro-econometric literature on firm export decisions, without leading to any firm conclusions. In part this reflects the limited information content of the data typically used. In this paper we use survey data on UK firms to offer some new insights into this debate. Consistent with the literature we find that the impacts of exporting on the size of firms are strongest, but that productivity type impacts also occur. These effects are larger the higher the export intensity of firms and the shorter their export experience. JEL classification: D21, F14

Globalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2003 / 45 Exporting , Productivity and Agglomeration : A Difference in Difference Analysis of Matched Firms
In this paper we consider three questions. Why do only some firms enter export markets? What are the benefits to the firm from export market entry? Why do some of these firms exit the market at a future date? Using data on UK manufacturing firms from 1988 to 2002 we find evidence that information spillovers between firms can raise the probability of entry and for a matched sample of firms there...

This paper investigates the two way relationship between R&D and export activity. In particular, we concern ourselves with the question whether R&D stimulates exports and, perhaps more importantly, whether export activity leads to increasing innovative activity in terms of R&D (learning by exporting). We use two unique firm level databases for Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland and compa...

This paper investigates the impact of acquisition FDI on exporting intensity in U.K manufacturing. A quasi-likelihood estimation method is used, and the empirical estimates point to the following conclusions: (i) UK firms with higher exporting intensity are more likely to be foreign takeover targets; (ii) US acquired firms increase their exporting intensity, consistent with the idea that acquis...
متن کاملGlobalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2005 / 04 Knowledge accumulation and productivity : Evidence from plant level data for Ireland
This paper investigates whether knowledge accumulating activities, such as exporting, R&D, or worker training, can enhance plants’ productivity. To this end we use plant level panel data for Irish manufacturing. Our results importantly indicate that productivity enhancing effects of these factors are found only for domestic firms, but not for foreign multinationals located in Ireland. We postul...
متن کاملGlobalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2007 / 07 Exports and international knowledge transfer : Evidence from UK firms by Richard Kneller
Within the recent literature studying participation in international markets using micro data, a small number have suggested that firms benefit from their exposure to international markets. One channel considered for this role has been investments in R&D. A common finding in this literature is that firms involved in international trade are also more likely to also undertake R&D. In this paper w...
