The origin of primary nitrogen in galaxies

چکیده

We investigate the role of stellar axial rotation on the nitrogen nucleosynthesis at low metallicities Z. For this purpose, we have calculated models with initial masses between 2 and 60 M⊙ at Z=0.00001 from the zero age sequence to the phase of thermal pulses for models below or equal to 7 M⊙, and up to the end of central C–burning for the more massive stars. The models include all the main physical effects of rotation. We show that intermediate mass stars with rotation naturally reproduce the occurrence and amount of primary nitrogen in the early star generations in the Universe. We identify two reasons why rotating models at low Z produce primary N: 1) Since the stars lose less angular momentum, they rotate faster. Simultaneously, they are more compact, thus differential rotation and shear mixing are stronger. 2) The H–burning shell has a much higher temperature and is thus closer to the core, which favours mixing between the two.

DASTWAR: a tool for completeness estimation in magnitude-size plane

Today, great observatories around the world, devote a substantial amount of observing time to sky surveys. The resulted images are inputs of source finder modules. These modules search for the target objects and provide us with source catalogues. We sought to quantify the ability of detection tools in recovering faint galaxies regularly encountered in deep surveys. Our approach was based on com...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Abundances in Spiral Galaxies: Evidence for Primary Nitrogen Production

We present the results of nitrogen and oxygen abundance measurements for 185 H II regions spanning a range of radius in 13 spiral galaxies. As expected, the nitrogen–to–oxygen ratio increases linearly with the oxygen abundance for high metallicity H II regions, indicating that nitrogen is predominately a secondary element. However, the nitrogen–to–oxygen ratio plateaus for oxygen abundances les...

Starbursts in barred spiral galaxies IV . On

The oxygen (O/H) and N/O abundance ratios along the bar of 16 barred spiral starburst galaxies are determined using long–slit spectroscopy. The abundance gradients and the spatial distribution of the ionized gas along the bar are used to understand the role of bars in starburst galaxies. The oxygen abundance gradients are steeper than in normal barred galaxies, with a mean of –0.15 dex/kpc, whi...

N/O-trends in Late-Type Galaxies: AGB-stars, IMFs, Abundance Gradients and the Origin of Nitrogen

Models of galactic chemical evolution (CEMs) show that the shape of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and other assumptions regarding star formation affect the resultant abundance gradients in models of late-type galaxies. Furthermore, intermediate mass (IM) stars undeniably play an important role in the buildup of nitrogen abundances in galaxies. Here I specifically discuss the nitrogen ...
