چکیده

An Economic Analysis of Exclusion Restrictions for Instrumental Variable Estimation Instrumental variable estimation requires untestable exclusion restrictions. With policy effects on individual outcomes, there is typically a time interval between the moment the agent realizes that he may be exposed to the policy and the actual exposure or the announcement of the actual treatment status. In such cases there is an incentive for the agent to acquire information on the value of the IV. This leads to violation of the exclusion restriction. We analyze this in a dynamic economic model framework. This provides a foundation of exclusion restrictions in terms of economic behavior. The results are used to describe policy evaluation settings in which instrumental variables are likely or unlikely to make sense. For the latter cases we analyze the asymptotic bias. The exclusion restriction is more likely to be violated if the outcome of interest strongly depends on interactions between the agent’s effort before the outcome is realized and the actual treatment status. The bias has the same sign as this interaction effect. Violation does not causally depend on the weakness of the candidate instrument or the size of the average treatment effect. With experiments, violation is more likely if the treatment and control groups are to be of similar size. We also address side-effects. We develop a novel economic interpretation of placebo effects and provide some empirical evidence for the relevance of the analysis. JEL Classification: C31, C21, D81, J68, D82, D83, D84, C35, C51

An Instrumental Variable Probit (IVP) Analysis on Depressed Mood in Korea: The Impact of Gender Differences and Other Socio-Economic Factors

Background Depression is a mental health state whose frequency has been increasing in modern societies. It imposes a great burden, because of the strong impact on people’s quality of life and happiness. Depression can be reliably diagnosed and treated in primary care: if more people could get effective treatments earlier, the costs related to depression would be reversed. The aim of this study ...

A Nonlinear Model of Economic Data Related to the German Automobile Industry

Prediction of economic variables is a basic component not only for economic models, but also for many business decisions. But it is difficult to produce accurate predictions in times of economic crises, which cause nonlinear effects in the data. Such evidence appeared in the German automobile industry as a consequence of the financial crisis in 2008/09, which influenced exchange rates and a...

Returns to Schooling in Urban China: New Evidence Using Heteroskedasticity Restrictions to Obtain Identification Without Exclusion Restrictions

We estimate the returns to schooling using matched employer-employee data from Shanghai. To do so, we use a novel identification strategy, proposed by Lewbel (2012), which utilizes a heteroscedastic covariance restriction to construct an internal instrumental variable (IV). We find that, for the full sample, the Lewbel (2012) IV estimation suggests returns to schooling generally in the range 25...

Extending Instrumental Variable Method for Effective Economic Modelling

Economic modeling that yields practical value must cater for effects caused by exogenous variables. AutoRegressive eXogenous approach (ARX) has been widely used in regional economic studies. Instrumental Variable Method is regarded as a preferential method to parametric estimation in ARX modeling. However, traditional instrumental variable methods can only handle single variable which has limit...

Testing Endogeneity in a Regression Model: An Application of Instrumental Variable Estimation

A goal of economic research is to determine the causal relationship among economic variables. This paper introduces the Hausman speci cation test of endogeneity, for testing the independence between the stochastic regressor and the disturbances. We describe alternative approaches to estimating simultaneous-equation systems and we present an empirical example of economic growth and health that n...
