Serum Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF-Α) Levels after Anti-Tuberculous Therapy

چکیده
The monocyte/macrophage-derived cytokine, Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF-α) plays a central role in effective granulomatous immunity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections in humans. The present study was conducted to document changes in the serum TNF-α level of patients after varying durations of anti-tuberculous therapy as compared to normal healthy controls. A comparative study was conducted at Ayub Teaching Hospital Abbottabad from January to June 2009 by selecting 64 patients of pulmonary tuberculosis undergoing standard anti-tuberculous therapy of varying durations; seventeen normal healthy individuals acted as controls. Along with other clinical and laboratory indices of disease, the serum TNF-α level was measured from patients by ELISA and compared to controls. The mean serum TNF-α levels of patients were significantly decreased as compared to controls (p<0.001); moreover, serum TNF-α levels continued to decline with increasing duration of therapy. In Conclusion Serum TNF-α level of patients undergoing anti-tuberculous therapy should be monitored to prevent significant decreases from normal levels in order to prevent immunosuppression and enhanced risk of opportunistic infections.

Effect of ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol supplementations on serum leptin, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and serum amyloid A levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Objective: Diabetes mellitus Type 2 is one of the most widespread chronic metabolic diseases. In most cases, this type of diabetes is associated with alterations in levels of some inflammatory cytokines and hormones. Considering anti-inflammatory properties of plant extracts rich in ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E), anti-diabetic properties of these two well-known anti...

Background: Periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) share a number of clinical and pathologic features, one of which is the presence of the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)-induced bone resorption that is involved in the pathogenesis of both. Objectives: To investigate the effect of TNF-α blockade on periodontal conditions in patients with active RA. Method: The periodontal statuses of 3...

We investigated the effects of treatment with antibodies against tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α on energy metabolism, nutritional status, serum cytokine levels in patients with Crohn's disease (CD). Twelve patients were enrolled. Resting energy expenditure (REE) levels were measured by indirect calorimetry. Crohn's disease activity index (CDAI) significantly decreased after treatment with anti-T...

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) expression amplifies to excess amounts in several disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Although, Anti-TNF biologics have revolutionized the treatment of these autoimmune diseases, formation of anti-drug antibodies (ADA) has dramatically affected their use. The next generation antibodies (e.g. Fab, scFv) have not only reduced resulted immunoge...
