چکیده

SYNOPSIS This work reports a detailed study on the shear magnetorheology of suspensions of magnetic microfibers. The steady-state regime was investigated using a controlled-stress rheometer, for different concentrations of particles and under the presence of a broad range of applied magnetic fields (up to 512 kA m-1). The results were compared with those obtained for conventional magnetorheological fluids (suspensions of magnetic microspheres). It was found that the suspensions of magnetic fibers show an enhanced magnetorheological effect. We proposed the existence of field-dependent solid friction between fibers as the main physical reason for this enhancement. In order to ascertain the relevance of the interfiber solid friction, the microscopic structure of fiber suspensions was investigated using an optical microscope. In the absence of applied field, fibers form an entangled network with approximately isotropic orientation. Upon magnetic field application, the fiber network becomes deformed and 2 approximately aligned with the field direction. Nonetheless, interfiber solid friction hinders a complete alignment of the fibers with the field, and the fiber network remains entangled.

TITLE OF THE ARTICLE: Magnetorheology of fiber suspensions. II. Theory AUTHORS:

SYNOPSIS This paper reports the first predictions of the yield stress of suspensions of non-Brownian magnetic fibers in the presence of uniform magnetic fields. The quasi-static regime of the shear deformation (before the flow onset) of the suspension is studied. Four different structures of the magnetic fiber suspensions are considered – column, zigzag, 3D stochastic and near-planar stochastic...

Derivation of turbulent energy of fiber suspensions

The energy equation for turbulent flow of fiber suspensions was derived in terms of second order correlation tensors. Fiber motion of turbulent energy including the correlation between pressure fluctuations and velocity fluctuations was discussed at two points of flow field, at which the correlation tensors were the functions of space coordinates, distance between two points, and time.

Simulations of Flexible Fiber Suspensions

Understanding the behavior of flexible fiber suspensions is challenging because of the many variables that affect macroscopic properties (such as fiber length, concentration, shape, flexibility, interactions, etc.), and the difficulty of systematically varying the system variables in experimental studies. In this report, we show how fiber-level simulations can be used to systematically investig...

Synthesis and magnetorheology of suspensions of cobalt particles with tunable particle size

Different samples of cobalt powder were synthesized. Particle size and shape were characterized by electron microscopy and light scattering. These measures showed that the synthesized powders consisted of monodisperse spheres with average diameters ranging between 63 and 760 nm. These powders were used for the preparation of magnetorheological (MR) fluids by dispersing them in silicone oil. It ...

Modeling pulp fiber suspension rheology

Rheological properties of pulp suspensions play a very important role in the industry, mainly due to the consumption of energy for transporting pulp among the different parts of the paper mill. In this work, we determined the rheology of longand short-fiber bleached kraft pulp suspensions by using a new rotational viscometer especially designed for their analysis. The experimental rheograms wer...
