Matrix-enhanced secondary ion mass spectrometry: The Alchemist’s solution?

چکیده

Because of the requirements of large molecule characterization and high-lateral resolution SIMS imaging, the possibility of improving molecular ion yields by the use of specific sample preparation procedures has recently generated a renewed interest in the static SIMS community. In comparison with polyatomic projectiles, however, signal enhancement by a matrix might appear to some as the alchemist’s versus the scientist’s solution to the current problems of organic SIMS. In this contribution, I would like to discuss critically the pros and cons of matrix-enhanced SIMS procedures, in the new framework that includes polyatomic ion bombardment. This discussion is based on a short review of the experimental and theoretical developments achieved in the last decade with respect to the three following approaches: (i) blending the analyte with a low-molecular weight organic matrix (MALDI-type preparation procedure); (ii) mixing alkali/noble metal salts with the analyte; (iii) evaporating a noble metal layer on the analyte sample surface (organic molecules, polymers). # 2006 Elsevier B.V. Sequencing and Identification of Endogenous Neuropeptides with Matrix-Enhanced Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Matrix-enhanced secondary ion mass spectrometry (ME-SIMS) has overcome one of the biggest disadvantages of SIMS analysis by providing the ability to detect intact biomolecules at high spatial resolution. By increasing ionization efficiency and minimizing primary ion beam-induced fragmentation of analytes, ME-SIMS has proven useful for detection of numerous biorelevant species, now including pep...

Diffusion-limited interaction of dislocation loops and interstitials during dry oxidation in silicon

The interaction of implantation-induced dislocation loops and interstitials in silicon is studied. Experiments under dry oxidation conditions consistently show a significant reduction of OED (oxidation enhanced diffusion) of boron in a buried layer due to very efficient interstitial capturing action of dislocation loops, suggesting diffusion-limited dislocation loop growth. Simple analytic solu...

Investigations of electrospray sample deposition for polymer MALDI mass spectrometry.

In the interest of a more thorough understanding of the relationship between sample deposition technique and the quality of data obtained using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry, details of the electrospray (ES) process of sample deposition are investigated using a number of techniques. Sample morphology was observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) an...

Time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry imaging of biological samples with delayed extraction for high mass and high spatial resolutions

RATIONALE In Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), pulsed and focused primary ion beams enable mass spectrometry imaging, a method which is particularly useful to map various small molecules such as lipids at the surface of biological samples. When using TOF-SIMS instruments, the focusing modes of the primary ion beam delivered by liquid metal ion guns can provide either a ...
