The Uplifting Ries Impact Crater
نویسنده
چکیده
The Ries Crater was formed about 12 million years ago, 120 km northwest of Munich in the district of Donau-Ries. The crater is estimated to have had a diameter of approximately 24 kilometers. In this report we discuss the preand post-impact structure of the crater site, and in particular try to investigate whether or not the Ries Crater shows evidence of structural uplift, a characteristic of many complex craters. To this end, we review recent analyses of seismic refraction data, magnetotelluric depth soundings, and numerical simulations.

Search for Fullerenes in Rocks from Ries Impact Crater
Fullerenes have been so far identified in a few rock types with unique geological history. One group of these finds is related to impacts of extraterrestrial bodies on Earth surface, strictly speaking the impact structure of Sudbury (Becker et al., 1994) and to events recorded from Permian/Triassic (Becker et al., 2001) and Cretaceous/Tertiary boundaries (Heymann et al., 1994). Generally two ba...
متن کاملRies Crater and Suevite Revisited : Part Ii Modelling
Introduction: At the 26-km-diameter Ries impact structure (Germany) suevite occurs in three different geological settings [1]: (1) a thick continuous layer in the central crater cavity inside the inner ring (" crater suevite " = CS), (2) thin isolated patches on top of the continuous ejecta blanket (" outer suevite " = OS), and (3) dikes in the crater basement and in displaced megablocks. In th...
متن کاملRies Crater and Suevite Revisited: Part I Observations
Introduction: The Ries of Nördlingen (diameter: 26 km, age: 14.35 Ma) is the type locality of suevite which is the most characteristic rock type formed in impact craters. Though studied since 1834 [1], the formation and emplacement of suevite in the Ries and in impact craters in general is still enigmatic. As information from suevite can contribute significantly with regard to understanding the...
متن کاملDifferential Alteration of Glass Clasts in the Surficial Suevites of the Ries Crater, Germany
The mid-Miocene (14.3 + 0.2 Ma; [1]) Ries impact crater located in southern Germany was formed in a two-layer target comprised of dominantly Mesozoic flat lying siliciclastic and carbonate sedimentary rocks that unconformably overlie crystalline Hercynian basement [2]. Ries is a complex crater with a total diameter of ~24 km [2]. Impactite and ejecta deposits are exceptionally well preserved. T...
متن کاملPreliminary X-ray Diffraction Evidence of Hydrothermal Alteration in the Bosumtwi Imapct Crater
Introduction: The Bosumtwi Impact Crater in Ghana, Africa (6°32’N, 1°25’W) is a large complex crater. The crater is 10.5 km in diameter, with a central uplift 2 km in diameter. It is the source of the Ivory Coast Tektite field, found to the southwest of the crater over 200 km away. This study investigates the mineralogy, the petrology, and the geochemistry of drill core samples taken near the c...
