The effect of ageostrophy on the stability of thin oceanic vortices

چکیده
This paper examines the stability of vortices in a two-layer ocean on the f -plane. The mean depth h̄1 of the upper layer is assumed to be much smaller than the depth h̄2 of the lower layer. Using the primitive equations, we derive an asymptotic criterion for baroclinic instability of compensated (i.e. confined to the upper layer) vortices. Surprisingly, it coincides exactly with a similar criterion derived from the quasigeostrophic equations [Benilov, E.S., 2003. Instability of quasigeostrophic vortices in a two-layer ocean with thin upper layer. J. Fluid Mech. 475, 303–331]. Thus, to leading order in h̄1/h̄2, ageostrophy does not affect the stability properties of thin compensated vortices. As a result, whether a vortex is stable or not, depends on its shape, not amplitude (although the growth rate of an unstable vortex does depend on its amplitude). © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Buckling of imperfect thin shell tank which is subjected to uniform axial compression is analyzed. The effect of internal pressure on the stability of a shell tank filled with a homogeneous-heterogeneous liquid was considered. Investigation of the liquid nature effect on reduction of the shell buckling load is performed by using the finite elements method. Calculating results in terms of analyt...
متن کاملBuckling Analysis of Thin Functionally Graded Rectangular Plates with two Opposite Edges Simply Supported
In this article, an exact analytical solution for thermal buckling analysis of thin functionallygraded (FG) rectangular plates is presented. Based on the classical plate theory and using the principle ofminimum total potential energy, the stability equations are obtained. Since the material properties in FGmaterials are functions of the coordinates (specially the thickness), the stability equat...
متن کاملStable Vortices in a Continuously Stratified Oceanwith Thin Active Layer
This paper presents a model which yields examples of stable vortices in a continuously stratified rotating fluid, thus providing a possible explanation of the observed longevity of oceanic eddies. The model is based on two assumptions. Firstly, the ocean comprises a thin upper (active) layer and a thick lower (passive) one, with large and small vertical gradients of density, respectively. Secon...
متن کاملEffect of Wing Sweep Angle on the Vortex Interaction of a Tail-Wing Configuration
The goal of this investigation is to study the effect of wing sweep angle on the horizontal wing-body- tail configurations in subsonic flow. For this purpose, a series of wind tunnel tests were conducted on a model having a moveable horizontal tail and a wing planform with different sweep angles. Tests were performed at different tail deflection angles. Static surface pressure distribution over...
متن کاملThermal Stability of Thin Rectangular Plates with Variable Thickness Made of Functionally Graded Materials
In this research, thermal buckling of thin rectangular plate made of Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) with linear varying thickness is considered. Material properties are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The supporting condition of all edges of such a plate is simply supported. ...
