Using effects of parasitoid size on fitness to test a host quality model assumption with the parasitoid wasp Spalangia endius

How body size affects fitness of males relative to females is relevant to understanding the evolution of sexual size dimorphism and maternal sex-ratio manipulation. In most parasitoid wasps, mothers oviposit a greater proportion of daughters in larger hosts. The host-quality model describes how this may be adaptive. A major assumption of the model is that host size has a greater effect on the f...

Effect of prey abundance and size on the distribution of demersal fishes

Many demersal fish species rely on benthic prey as food sources for part of, or in some cases, all of their life history. We investigated the relationships between prey and predator abundance and prey size and predator mouth gape size for nine demersal fish species. Of the species analysed, four showed a significant positive increase in abundance with increasing prey abundance. Prey size is tho...

A length-based hypothesis for feeding migrations in pelagic fish

We evaluated the costs and benefits of long-distance horizontal migration by pelagic planktivores, Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus), blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou), mackerel (Scomber scombrus), and capelin (Mallotus villosus) in the Norwegian and Barents seas using a numerical model and tested model predictions against field observations. Specifically, we considered (i) energetic cos...

Egg size as a predictor of nutrient composition of eggs and neonates of Canada Geese (Branta canadensis interior) and Lesser Snow Geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens)

Fresh and pipped eggs were collected to provide data on nutrient composition of eggs and neonates, respectively, of Canada Geese (Branta canadensis interior) and Lesser Snow Geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens). We sought to determine how well a commonly used and simple index like estimated egg volume or “egg size” predicted egg composition and neonate characteristics including body compositi...

The direct and indirect effects of temperature on a predator–prey relationship

Abiotic factors may directly influence community structure by influencing biotic interactions. In aquatic systems, where gape-limited predators are common, abiotic factors that influence organisms’ growth rates potentially mediate predator–prey interactions indirectly through effects on prey size. We tested the hypothesis that temperature influences interactions between aquatic size-limited ins...
