چکیده

The three main components of an ERD are the entities, attributes, and relationships. Entities things or objects with independent existence, such as persons, products, companies, courses. Entities are the nouns of the ERD. Attributes the properties describing an entity. Relationships the way entities interact or refer to each other. Relationships are the verbs of the ERD. For example, a person supervises a department, an instructor teaches a course, a person works on a project.

The Use of Uml Class Diagrams to Teach Database Modelling and Database Design

It is now nearly 30 years since Peter Chen’s watershed paper “The Entity-Relationship Model – towards a Unified View of Data”. [1] The entity relationship model and variations and extensions to it have been taught in colleges and universities for many years. In his original paper Peter Chen looked at converting his new ER model to the then existing data structure diagrams for the Network model....

Issues and Guidelines in Modeling Decomposition of Minimum Participation in Entity-Relationship Diagrams

The entity-relationship model has long been employed for conceptual modeling of databases. Methodologies and heuristics have been developed, both for effective modeling and for translating entity-relationship models into relational models. One aspect of modeling that is often overlooked in design methodologies is the use of optional versus mandatory participation (i.e., minimum participation) o...

Database Design with Uml: Implementation Issues

The paper examines the benefits and drawbacks of the object-relational database technology using UML diagrams in comparison with the entity-relationship approach. Guidelines for transition to UML are presented and mapping strategy to relational and object-relational schema is overviewed. OR database extensions are outlined and two of the most popular object oriented modelling tools Oracle Desig...

Mapping Uninterpreted Schemes into Entity-Relationship Diagrams: Two Applications to Conceptual Schema Design

A method of mapping sets of uninterpreted record or relation schemes into entity-relationship diagrams is described and then applied to two conceptual design problems. First, the method is applied to the design of relational databases. It is shown that the method can be interpreted as a normalization procedure that maps a given relational schema into a new schema that represents an entity-relat...
