چکیده
INTRODUCTION Peripheral nerves slide and stretch during limb movements. Changes in nerve stiffness associated with such movements have not been examined in detail but may be important in understanding movement-evoked pain in patients with a variety of different musculoskeletal conditions. METHODS Shear-wave elastography was used to examine stiffness in the median and tibial nerves of healthy individuals during postures used clinically to stretch these nerves. RESULTS Shear-wave velocity increased when limbs were moved into postures that are thought to increase nerve stiffness (mean increase: median nerve = 208% in arm, 236% in forearm; tibial nerve = 136%). There was a trend toward a negative correlation between age and shear-wave velocity (r = 0.58 for tibial nerve). CONCLUSIONS Shear-wave elastography provides a tool for examining nerve biomechanics in healthy individuals and patients. However, limb position, age, and effects of nerve tension on neural architecture should be taken into consideration. Muscle Nerve 55: 213-222, 2017.

Non-invasive assessment of sciatic nerve stiffness during human ankle motion using ultrasound shear wave elastography.
Peripheral nerves are exposed to mechanical stress during movement. However the in vivo mechanical properties of nerves remain largely unexplored. The primary aim of this study was to characterize the effect of passive dorsiflexion on sciatic nerve shear wave velocity (an index of stiffness) when the knee was in 90° flexion (knee 90°) or extended (knee 180°). The secondary aim was to determine ...
متن کاملQuantification of dry needling and posture effects on myofascial trigger points using ultrasound shear-wave elastography.
OBJECTIVES To determine (1) whether the shear modulus in upper trapezius muscle myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) reduces acutely after dry needling (DN), and (2) whether a change in posture from sitting to prone affects the shear modulus. DESIGN Ultrasound images were acquired in B mode with a linear transducer oriented in the transverse plane, followed by performance of shear-wave elastogra...
متن کاملMR elastography following focused ultrasound treatment of uterine fibroids
Background Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) is a technique in which shear waves are induced in soft tissues and are imaged by Magnetic Resonance (MR) is to assess tissue stiffness. While gadolinium has served as the standard for assessing immediate post treatment changes in the fibroids, some patients may have allergies to gadolinium preventing use of this contrast agent. Additionally, som...
متن کاملEvaluation of the diagnostic function of shear wave elastography in the differentiation of malignant and benign breast masses and its relationship with histological factors
Background: Shear wave elastography (SWE) estimates the stiffness of a mass based on the velocity of shear wave propagation by sound waves. Due to higher cell density and angiogenesis, malignant masses have higher stiffness than benign ones. Methods: The present study was a prospective study and was performed on patients who were referred to Ahvaz Golestan Hospital with breast mass during Marc...
متن کاملIntroduction to ultrasound elastography
For centuries tissue palpation has been an important diagnostic tool. During palpation, tumors are felt as tissues harder than the surrounding tissues. The significance of palpation is related to the relationship between mechanical properties of different tissue lesions. The assessment of tissue stiffness through palpation is based on the fact that mechanical properties of tissues are changing ...
