The Acceleration of Regeneration in Starved Planarians by Ribonucleic Acid

چکیده
I T appears to be highly probable (Br0ndsted, 1953) that starvation retards regeneration in planarians. This finding justifies closer investigation into the importance of various substances for regeneration. Regeneration is of course a very complicated phenomenon and involves chains and networks of innumerable chemical processes. Amongst the substances involved it seems profitable to focus on those which are known to be or assumed to be of immediate importance for morphogenetic processes. In this work the influence of ribonucleic acid (RNA) has been investigated, starting from the suggestion of J. Brächet (1947) and others that ribonucleic acid may have a direct effect on morphogenesis.

Ribonucleic acid metabolism during planarian regeneration.
A method for the extraction of total RNA of the planarian Polycelis tenuis is described. This technique has been applied to the study of RNA synthesis in the course of regeneration. Synthesis of RNA begins 7 hrs after sectioning and proceeds in two phases. The first phase, from 7 to 21 hr is characterized by an increased rate of (3H) orotic acid incorporation into RNA up to the 18th after secti...

The mechanisms that define the body pattern during development and regeneration are the object of major concern in developmental biology. To understand the process and sequence of antero-posterior pattern formation of planarian body regions during regeneration, regenerating organisms were treated with exogenous retinoic acid, which affects development and regeneration in other systems, and the ...

was developed. This procedure involved measuring the binding of purified, radioactively labeled, antiflagellar antibodies to bacteria. The assay was used to determine the requirements for ribonucleic acid (RNA) and protein synthesis during flagellar regeneration in Bacillus subtilis. Immediate inhibition of flagella development was observed when chloramphenical or puromycin was added to cells. ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Perfluorooctanoic Acid on the Planarian Dugesia japonica
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been found to distribute and accumulate widely in the environment. In this study, the acute toxicity, behavioral activity, regeneration, antioxidant enzyme activities, and cell apoptosis effects of PFOA on planarian Dugesia japonica have been investigated. The results show that the mortality is directly proportional to the PFOA concentration, and planarian loco...
