Particle Beam may have Higher Effectiveness in Treating Chemo-resistant Cancers than Low-LET Photon Beam Therapy.

چکیده
It is now well-established that outcomes of radiotherapy depend on quality of radiation. A large body of experimental evidences suggests that high-LET (linear energy transfer) radiation or particle radiation has the ability to kill tumor cells more efficiently than low-LET photon beams such as X-rays and γ-rays [1,2]. The unique characteristics of particle beam, which includes precise dose distribution, formation of complex and “clustered” DNA damage in target cells, capacity to kill cells with equal effectiveness irrespective of their cell cycle stage and oxygen content, ability to cause biological damage by direct action, and inverse dosedepth relation are considered to be responsible for higher relative biological effectiveness (RBE) than low-LET photon beams. However, the efficacy of particle radiation in killing chemo-resistant cells compared to low-LET radiation is not well-documented.

Relative biological effectiveness (RBE) is an important quantity in planning particle beam cancer therapy. In general, the RBE describes the biological effectiveness of a given primary beam with respect to a reference photon irradiation. RBE varies not only for different primary beams but also with depth in the target for a given beam modality. It is not a quantity that easily lends itself to m...
متن کاملImpact of Silicone gel breast prosthesis on photon beam therapy of recurrence carcinoma post mastectomy
AbstractIntroduction Silicone gel breast implants are used for breast reconstruction post mastectomy. In the event of cancer recurrence, the radiation oncologists are forced to irradiate through the prosthesis device. Due to prosthesis higher atomic number dose perturbations occur during treatment. This study determined the influence of silicone gel thickness on the photon beam distribution. Ma...
متن کاملInvestigating The Role of Helium Bag On Electron Contamination Removal Using Beam NRC
Introduction: Several studies have discussed to the electron contamination caused by the air column between the head of linac and patient for photon beams. Since it is not possible to measure the electron contamination with practical dosimetry, the Monte Carlo technique is an appropriate and accurate choice to calculate particle flounce in radiation therapy. The purpose of t...
متن کاملMonte Carlo calculations of dose distribution for the treatment of gastric cancer with proton therapy
Proton therapy is a common form of external radiation therapy based on the manipulation of Bragg peak of this beam, it can treat the tumor by delivering high levels of doses to it, while protecting surrounding healthy tissues against radiation. In this work, the dose distribution of proton and secondary particles such as neutrons, photons, electrons and positrons in gastric cancer proton therap...
متن کاملParticle Beam Therapy for Cancer of the Skull Base, Nasal Cavity, and Paranasal Sinus
Particle beam therapy has been rapidly developed in these several decades. Proton and carbon ion beams are most frequently used in particle beam therapy. Proton and carbon ion beam radiotherapy have physical and biological advantage to the conventional photon radiotherapy. Cancers of the skull base, nasal cavity, and paranasal sinus are rare; however these diseases can receive the benefits of p...
