Recent Trends in Emerging Technologies toward 5G Networks

Considering current trends, the need for more sophisticated bandwidth-intensive services will further push the limits on future standards to provide integration between wireless technologies and higher speeds, requiring a new generation of mobile networks, the so-called fifth generation (5G). Advanced technologies such as massive MIMO and millimeter-wave systems will have significant impact on design of cellular architecture. Among the new features foreseen by 5G networks, device to device communication may have a prominent role. This paper seeks to provide a comprehensive survey of flagship research trends in the domain of emerging 5G technologies. Key-Words: 5G architecture, D2D communications, massive MIMO, mmWave, network densification.
