چکیده

Plants have evolved multiple strategies associated with the induction of mechanisms or traits in response to herbivore attack ( Fineblum and Rausher, 1995 ; Strauss and Agrawal, 1999 ; Núñez-Farf á n et al., 2007 ). On the one hand, following herbivore attack, plants can increase the production of chemical compounds or physical traits that drastically reduce herbivore damage ( Núñez-Farf á n et al., 2007 ; Agrawal, 2011 ). On the other hand, aft er herbivore damage, plants can mitigate the negative eff ects of herbivory by mechanisms of induced tolerance such as compensatory growth and reproduction, increased photosynthetic rates, and changes in nutrient allocation and uptake ( Strauss and Agrawal, 1999 ; Stowe et al., 2000 ; NúñezFarf á n et al., 2007 ; Fornoni, 2011 ; Moreira et al., 2012 ; Carmona and Fornoni, 2013 ). It is increasingly recognized that the nature of induced plant responses largely depends on the identity of the herbivore ( Agrawal, 2000 ; Van Zandt and Agrawal, 2004 ; Rasmann and Turlings, 2008 ; Bingham and Agrawal, 2010 ; Moreira et al., 2013 ). Recent investigations have shown that plants are able to recognize biotic stimuli (e.g., oviposition secretions and saliva) produced by diff erent herbivores, integrate the perceived information, and react accordingly in a highly specifi c manner ( Mithöfer and Boland, 2008 ). Qualitative variability of lima bean's VOC bouquets and its putative ecological consequences.

Studies on direct and indirect defenses of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) revealed a quantitative trade-off between cyanogenesis and the total quantitative release of herbivore-induced volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this addendum we focus on the qualitative variability in the VOC bouquets. We found intraspecific and ontogenetic variation. Five out of eleven lima bean accessions lacked ...

Induction of two indirect defences benefits Lima bean ( Phaseolus lunatus , Fabaceae ) in nature

1 Herbivore damage often induces the release of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) or the secretion of extrafloral nectar (EFN). The purpose of this study was to induce such proposed indirect defence responses in plants growing in their natural environment and to monitor the effects on vegetative and generative traits such as herbivory, plant growth and fruit set. 2 I tested whether matu...

Synergism in the effect of prior jasmonic acid application on herbivore-induced volatile emission by Lima bean plants: transcription of a monoterpene synthase gene and volatile emission

Jasmonic acid (JA) plays a central role in induced plant defence e.g. by regulating the biosynthesis of herbivore-induced plant volatiles that mediate the attraction of natural enemies of herbivores. Moreover, exogenous application of JA can be used to elicit plant defence responses similar to those induced by biting-chewing herbivores and mites that pierce cells and consume their contents. In ...

Effect of mycorrhizal colonization and light limitation on growth and reproduction of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.)

Plants can respond with sink stimulation of photosynthesis when colonized with fungal or bacterial root symbionts, compensating costs of carbohydrate allocation to the microbes. However, constraints may arise under light limitation when plants cannot extensively increase photosynthesis. We hypothesize that under such conditions the costs for maintaining the symbiosis outweigh the benefits, ulti...

Herbivore-induced plant volatiles induce an indirect defence in neighbouring plants

1 Many plant species respond to herbivory with increased emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs): these attract carnivorous arthropods and thereby function as an indirect defence mechanism. Whether neighbouring plants can ‘eavesdrop’ on such airborne cues and tailor their defences accordingly, remains controversial. 2 We used Lima bean plants ( Phaseolus lunatus ) to investigate whether h...
