SYD: Building Trust in the Peer to Peer Wireless Network Confederation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Modern trends in Peer-to-Peer systems lean towards self organized communities based on peer contribution. The inherent difficulty encountered in such systems is that selfish peers that are mutually distrustful of each other are expected to cooperate in order to enjoy the benefit of consuming the resources shared through the p2p system. Furthermore, self organized p2p communities depend on free identities to retain their open nature and privacy requirements. Allowing the ability to change identities at will or to have multiple identities in a given community gives birth to certain attacks (known as Sybil attacks) that allow peers to consume without contributing and further increase distrust in the community. In this report we propose a new strategy Settle Your Debt (SYD) for members of the Peer to Peer Wireless Network Confederation (P2PWNC). We show that SYD avoids previous strategies’ vulnerability to Sybil attacks and helps to achieve a reasonably stable and thriving community without compromising the assumptions of peer selfishness and mutual distrust.

Designing a Peer-to-Peer Wireless Network Confederation
We present the Peer-to-Peer Wireless Network Confederation (P2PWNC), a P2P system designed to enable the sharing of WLAN bandwidth among residential hotspots. The benefits of joining the Confederation outweigh the costs, and its token-based incentive mechanism prevents free-riding. 1

Peer-to-peer applications (P2P) are no longer limited to home users, and start being accepted in academic and corporate environments. While file sharing and instant messaging applications are the most traditional examples, they are no longer the only ones benefiting from the potential advantages of P2P networks. For example, network file storage, data transmission, distributed computing, and co...

The interactions among peers in Peer-to-Peer systems as a distributed collaborative system are based on asynchronous and unreliable communications. Trust is an essential and facilitating component in these interactions specially in such uncertain environments. Various attacks are possible due to large-scale nature and openness of these systems that affects the trust. Peers has not enough inform...

متن کاملThe Peer-to-Peer Wireless Network Confederation Scheme
In metropolitan areas, public infrastructures for high-speed wireless networking can be built through the private contributions of individual “microoperators” who use their Internet-connected Wireless LANs (WLANs) to forward foreign traffic from and to nearby low-mobility clients. We have designed a practical WLAN aggregation scheme that (1) assumes that microoperators are selfish and do not tr...
