Comparative Analysis of the Efficiency of R-tree Based Indexing Strategies for Information Retrieval

Content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) is a flexible approach to access modern image database with large data size, whereby the actual images are described by multi-dimensional feature vectors. These are then indexed in the database to provide low retrieval latency. Currently, many different structures have been proposed, among them, the structures of the R-tree family, especially the R-tree, R*-tree, SS-tree and SR-tree are the most referenced. However, by now no comparison and analysis of the query performance, dynamic operations and file storage of these indexing strategies has been provided. This shortcoming is addressed in this paper and a detailed performance comparison provided.
