GOLUB, M. S., M. L. CHEAL AND R. E. DAWS. Effects of electroconvulsive shock and puromycin on operant responding in goldfish. Pt-~SIOL. Bm-IAV. 8 (4) 573-578, 1972.--Goldfish were conditioned to strike an operandum for food reward on a variable interval schedule. Well-established patterns of operant responding were disrupted for up to several days when the fish were convulsed by a 1 sec transcranial shock immediately following a regular daily session. No lasting interference was seen when fish were shocked 19.5 hr postsession. The results suggest that the convulsive shock has aversive consequences which can be conditioned to stimuli associated with the training environment in a single presentation. Intracranial administration of 170 ~tg of puromycin immediately following a session did not disrupt responding.

Electroconvulsive shock- or puromycin-induced retention deficits in goldfish given two active-avoidance sessions.
In a factorial design, goldfish received 15 active-avoidance training trials on Days 1, 7, and 13 followed by electroconvulsive shock (ECS) or n o treatment after the training session on Days 1 and 7. The final retention deficits observed when ECS was given after the f'trst session only or after the second session only were similar. Fish given ECS after both sessions showed a cumulative deficit...
متن کاملAnterograde and retrograde effects of electroconvulsive shock and of puromycin on memory formation in the goldfish.
Electroconvulsive shock [ECS] or puromycin administered prior to training did not significantly impair acquisition of shock-avoidance in goldfish. Significant retention deficits are observed on retraining 72 hr later in groups of fish that received ECS 2.5, 1 or 0.5 hr before training as well as in groups that received ECS 0, 4 or 24 hr after training. Puromycin produces significant retention d...
متن کاملThe effect of puromycin on retention of conditioned cardiac deceleration in the goldfish.
The electrocardiogram was used to measure conditioned heart rate deceleration to a light-off signal paired with a punishing electrical shock in the goldfish. The learned response was retained for several days but was rapidly lost with extinction trials. Intracranial injections of puromycin administered just before or immediately after a training session did not appear to block formation of memo...

Environmental control of ECS-produced retrograde amnesia in goldfish. PHYSIOL. BEHAV. The retrograde amnestic effect of ECS can be enhanced by exposing the goldfish to the intertrial environment for 25 mm just prior to administration of the ECS. As the interval between training and the ECS is increased, the amnesm produced by the environment-ECS interaction takes longer to develop. The environm...
متن کاملTemperature-dependent consolidation of puromycin-susceptible memory in the goldfish.
Memory of a shock-avoidance task in goldfish (Carassius auratus) maintained at 20°C shows a temporal gradient of insusceptibility to post-trial injection of puromycin upon testing 7 days later. Treatment with the antimetabolite 24 hr after training has no effect on retention. There is a significant decrease in the puromycin-induced memory loss if fish are warmed to 30°C for a 90-minute interval...
