چکیده

We report a dramatic variability event in the X–ray history of the Narrow–Line quasar PHL 1092 (z = 0.396). Our latest 2008 XMM–Newton observation reveals a flux drop of ∼ 200 with respect to the previous observation performed about 4.5 years earlier, and a drop of ∼ 135 with respect to its historical flux. Despite the huge X–ray variation, the UV flux remains constant producing a very significant steepening of the optical to X–ray slope αox from −1.56 to −2.44, making PHL 1092 one of the most extreme X–ray weak quasars. The similarity in the soft X–ray spectral shape between the present and previous observations, together with the persistent UV flux and the lack of any dramatic change in the optical spectrum suggest that an absorption event is not likely to be the origin of the observed variation. If absorption is ruled out, the sudden X–ray weakness of PHL 1092 must be produced by a transient significant weakening or disruption of the X–ray emitting corona.

ROSAT HRI monitoring of extreme X - ray variability in the narrow - line quasar PHL 1092

We report results from an 18-day ROSAT HRI monitoring campaign on the ultrasoft Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) class quasar PHL 1092. This luminous, radio-quiet quasar showed strong X-ray variability in a short ROSAT PSPC observation, and ROSAT HRI monitoring of the similar object IRAS 13224–3809 revealed extreme variability on intermediate timescales. We wanted to determine whether remarkable X-...

An intense soft - excess and evidence for light bending in the luminous narrow - line quasar PHL 1092

The narrow-line quasar PHL 1092 was observed by XMM-Newton at two epochs separated by nearly thirty months. Timing analyses confirm the extreme variability observed during previous X-ray missions. A measurement of the radiative efficiency is in excess of what is expected from a Schwarzschild black hole. In addition to the rapid X-ray variability, the short UV light curves (< 4 hours) obtained w...

Variability In The Narrow - Line QSO PHL 1092

A ROSAT observation of the narrow-line Fe II QSO PHL 1092 shows rapid variability that requires an efficiency of at least 0.13, exceeding the theoretical maximum for an accretion disk around a non-rotating black hole. Plausible explanations for this high efficiency incorporate anisotropic emission and/or accretion onto a rapidly rotating black hole, the latter recently suggested by Kwan et al. ...

We present a deep (∼85 ksec) ASCA observation of the prototype Broad Absorption Line Quasar (BALQSO) PHL 5200. This is the best X-ray spectrum of a BALQSO yet. We find that (1) the source is not intrinsically X-ray weak, (2) the line of sight absorption is very strong with NH = 5 × 10 23 cm, (3) the absorber does not cover the source completely; the covering fraction is ≈ 90%. This is consisten...

XMM-Newton OBSERVATIONS OF THE NARROW-LINE QSO PHL 1092: DETECTION OF A HIGH AND VARIABLE SOFT COMPONENT

We present results based on an XMM-Newton observation of the high luminosity narrow-line QSO PHL 1092 performed in 2003 January. The 0.3 − 10 keV spectrum is well described by a model which includes a power-law (Γ ∼ 2.1) and two blackbody components (kT ∼ 130 eV and kT ∼ 50 eV). The soft X-ray excess emission is featureless and contributes ∼ 80% to the total X-ray emission in the 0.3−10 keV ban...
