Taste aversion learning and schedule-induced polydipsia in rats

چکیده
Experiment 1 sought to determine whether schedule-induced drinking could be abolished by means of a taste aversion. Polydipsic rats were given access to a .4% saccharin solution while they were exposed to an intermittent food schedule. Immediately after the session, they received an intraperitoneal injection of either lithium chloride or sodium chloride. Following a recovery day with water in the experimental chamber, the animals were again exposed to the saccharin solution. The poisoned animals (lithium chloride) drank very little saccharin compared to the control animals (sodium chloride), indicating that they had learned a taste aversion in only one conditioning trial. Experiment 2 established that polydipsic rats can learn a taste aversion despite a long delay between schedule-induced saccharin consumption and poisoning, and that the delay gradient displayed by polydipsic rats is similar to that observed in thirst-motivated rats.

The propensity for schedule-induced polydipsia is related to differences in conditioned avoidance behaviour and in defense reactions in a defeat test.
In line with previous research showing that animals predisposed to develop schedule-induced polydipsia when submitted to intermittent distribution of food show differential behavioural and neurochemical characteristics, the present experiments investigated the nature of defense reactions to aversive situations in rats that do or do not develop schedule-induced polydipsia. It was found that rats...

Two experiments were run to evaluate the role of acetaldehyde and the area postrema in the acquisition of an ethanol-induced conditioned taste aversion. An ethanol-induced taste aversion was observed in male Sprague-Dawley rats with a dose of 4 g/kg. PO, but not after doses of 1 or 2 g/kg. Pretreatment with 4-methylpyrazole (8 mg/kg, IP), which itself did not induce an aversion as compared to p...
متن کاملFood-delay duration and the development of schedule-induced polydipsia in rats.
Twelve rats were exposed to a schedule that delivered a food pellet every 60 s (fixed time 60 s). The development of schedule-induced polydipsia was measured in terms of the water consumed and the licks per interpellet interval. Every lick by master rats initiated an unsignalled delay of 2 or 50 s in food delivery. Yoked-control rats received food at the same time as their masters, being unaffe...
متن کاملTaste-potentiated odor aversion learning in rats with lesions of the insular cortex.
The current study assessed the influence of excitotoxic lesions of the insular cortex (IC) on taste-potentiated odor aversion (TPOA) learning. Water-deprived rats initially received a single odor-toxicosis or odor/taste-toxicosis pairing and were subsequently tested, in separate trials, with the odor and the taste stimulus. Indicating TPOA, neurologically intact rats conditioned with the odor/t...
متن کاملA history of morphine-induced taste aversion learning fails to affect morphine-induced place preference conditioning in rats.
Drugs of abuse have both rewarding and aversive effects, as indexed by the fact that they support place preferences and taste aversions, respectively. In the present study, we explored whether having a history with the aversive effects of morphine (via taste aversion conditioning) impacted the subsequent rewarding effects of morphine, as measured in the place preference design. In Experiment 1,...
