Loss Aversion and Labor Supply

چکیده
Loss Aversion and Labor Supply In many occupations workers’ labor supply choices are constrained by institutional rules regulating labor time and effort provision. This renders explicit tests of the neoclassical theory of labor supply difficult. Here we present evidence from studies examining labor supply responses in “neoclassical environments” in which workers are free to choose when and how much to work. Despite the favorable environment the results cast doubt on the neoclassical model. They are, however, consistent with a model of reference dependent preferences exhibiting loss aversion and diminishing sensitivity. JEL Classification: J22, B49

Comparing Inequality Aversion across Countries When Labor Supply Responses Differ
Comparing Inequality Aversion across Countries When Labor Supply Responses Differ We analyze to which extent social inequality aversion differs across nations when controlling for actual country differences in labor supply responses. Towards this aim, we estimate labor supply elasticities at both extensive and intensive margins for 17 EU countries and the US. Using the same data, inequality ave...

Do Workers Work More When Wages Are High? Evidence from a Randomized Field Experiment Most previous studies on intertemporal labor supply found very small or insignificant substitution effects. It is not clear, however, whether these results are due to institutional constraints on workers’ labor supply choices or whether the behavioral assumptions of the standard life cycle model with time sepa...
متن کاملA New Method of Estimating Risk Aversion
This paper develops a new method of estimating risk aversion using data on labor supply behavior. In particular, I show that existing evidence on labor supply behavior places a tight upper bound on risk aversion in the expected utility model. I derive a formula for the coe¢ cient of relative risk aversion ( ) in terms of (1) the ratio of the income elasticity of labor supply to the wage elastic...
متن کاملLabor Supply and Risk Aversion: A Calibration Theorem
This paper shows that existing estimates of labor supply elasticities place a tight upper bound on risk aversion in an expected utility model. I derive a formula that relates the coefficient of relative risk aversion (γ) to the ratio of the income elasticity of labor supply to the wage elasticity, holding fixed the degree of complementarity between consumption and leisure. The degree of complem...
متن کاملA Prior Predictive Analysis of the Effects of Loss Aversion/Narrow Framing in a Macroeconomic Model for Asset Pricing
In a macroeconomic framework, I quantitatively evaluate the theory of Loss Aversion/Narrow Framing (LANF) as a resolution to the Equity Premium Puzzle (EPP). The EPP is where the neoclassical asset pricing model cannot be reconciled with the empirical fact that stocks have much higher returns than risk-free assets. The prior predictive analysis employed follows a Bayesian approach that draws re...
