چکیده

In 1971 a patient with suxamethonium-induced cardiac arrest in an unsuspected case of pseudohypertrophic muscular dystrophy was described (Genever, 1971). Suxamethonium has been implicated in several cases of muscular rigidity, hyperkalaemia and cardiac arrest and in malignant hyperpyrexia, and there is evidence that these reactions occur often when there are pre-existing muscular disorders including muscular dystrophies, hernias (Ellis and Halsall, 1980) and strabismus (Tammistoa et al., 1970). The mechanisms are unknown. A second patient with cardiac arrest in unsuspected pseudohypertrophic (Duchenne) muscular dystrophy is reported in this paper. In this case, however, there was a significant difference in that cardiac arrest was preceded by rigidity, cyanosis and acidosis.

Cardiorespiratory changes in progressive muscular dystrophy.

Incipient cardiac failure was detected in 56 per cent of cases of pseudohypertrophic muscular dystrophy, 50per cent oflimb girdle type ofmyopathies, and2 of the 3 cases with 'unclassifled' variety. 'Myopathic pattern' in the electrocardiogram was seen in 82 per cent of the cases of pseudohypertrophic muscular dystrophy who showed abnormal haemodynamics. This suggests that this pattern is due to...

P164: Adeno-Associated Viral Vectors in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (BMD) is an inherited X-link disease. The incidence of this muscle-wasting disease is 1:5000 male live births. Mutation in the gene coding for dystrophin is the main cause of BMD. Most cases of this disease succumb to respiratory and cardiac failure in 3rd to 4th decades. The slow progression of BMD and recent achievement of gene therapies make it as an appropriate c...

Cardiac arrest following inhalation induction of anaesthesia in a child with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy.

Cardiac arrest occurred in a 5 1/2-year-old child with suspected Duchenne's muscular dystrophy ten minutes following induction of anaesthesia with halothane, nitrous oxide and oxygen. No muscle relaxants were administered. The cardiac arrest was associated with hyperkalaemia, acidosis, myoglobinuria, elevated serum creatine phosphokinase and a 1.6 degrees C rise in temperature. The child made a...
